I just saw a video about BMWs ADAS and it seems much more primitive than BlueCruise (no real hands-free, no real speed sign recognition.) It looks like all it does is lane centering at a set speed with adaptive cruise control and provides “hands free” below 40 mph for “traffic jam assist”. The one thing that was demonstrated was driver-initiated automatic lane change. The driver would use the turn signal to request a lane change, and the vehicle would actually perform the lane change without driver input.
Will we be getting that?

Yeah, it was in a press release that was in the cards.

Sounds like Park Assist. A worthless feature that never gets used. Changing lanes isn't that hard. IMO, if people can't be bothered to make a lane change themselves then they shouldn't get behind the wheel.

Driver-initiated, yes. If they could ultimately evolve to independently-initiated lane changes, then that would be something. I’m just thinking of incremental steps here.

The Waymo cars are pretty good at it. In fact, I feel more comfortable driving next to semi trucks and Waymo vehicles than the average driver. I have never seen a Waymo vehicle do something unexpected or stupid. But it is kinda funny watching them try and make a lane change if everyone around them are impatient. Signal, move over, Oops....move back, try again..Oops, move back. :)

Waymo still exists? I thought Google killed that project?

Not only do they exist.....but they have all new Jaguar I Pace cars. Probably 4 or 6 of them I think. They are all over the place out here. I think one of my employees uses them to commute to work. He says he feels like an executive being driven around. :)

I sure hope so, Ford alluded to adding it, and the car has the sensors for it. Just software holding it back like usual.

Pricing for the system after the third year was not shared, but Ford has mentioned several BlueCruise features that will be coming in the future:

Lane Change Assist will have the vehicle change lanes itself after the driver uses the turn signal to initiate the change.
Predictive Speed Assist will allow the car to automatically slow for curves in the road, roundabouts and more.
Thousands of miles of new BlueCruise-approved roadways and updates to the system as roads change over time.

That is interesting.
I disable BC for freeway interchanges because the car gets too aggressive trying to maintain speed as it's being scrubbed off in the turn. BCHF already disables for interchanges, curves and tunnels but then drops to BCHO (Blue Cruise Hands-On) and then I promptly pause it for the interchanges. If it slowed down on it's own then I would be more likely to leave it engaged to see how it handles through those sections of the road. When BCHF drops to BCHO on the flat curves in the freeway, then I drop LKA so just ACC remains. That way I can take the apex in a more comfortable fashion. Maybe they can work on the steering in the curves so it doesn't drive like a 16 year old. That would be a pretty neat improvement.

For some reason, when using BCHF and there is something large in the lane to my right.....the car will steer closer and closer to that side of the lane until eventually the driver of the semi will sound his horn. If they are ahead of me and that vehicle is large enough and they touch the dashed white line...then my car will brake aggressively. I don't remember it ever doing that so it must be something new that was added with the BC software. I presume it thinks they are changing lanes and brakes to avoid being smashed. I can usually tell when a big rig is changing lanes vs just trying to keep their lane but having the car default to worst case scenario is also okay. Better safe than sorry I guess.

We all should remember, these are driving aids. We still are responsible for controlling our machines.

self driving cars easily get "bullied" by assertive drivers.

I would like to know what the rationale is for BlueCruise seeming to prefer the right side of a lane, or is that an optical illusion and the vehicle is actually centered in the lane and just appears to be further to the right because of the large object on the right in close proximity?

There are literally hundreds of Waymo I Pace cars in and around San Francisco. I see them literally every time I drive in my neighborhood. I understand from a friend they run an invitation only free Uber equivalent service in order to gain more driving miles learning... They all have human backup drivers too, AFAIK.
