With PaaK is the car virtually always awake?

Curious, when using PaaK, if I am often near the car with my phone (iPhone), isn't the car then almost always awake?
I have only had my GT a few days, and have PaaK setup. However, am not quite there yet, leaving my key fob at home. Probably a little nervous/scared...

There are certain things that are always active, yes. But that happens regardless of whether you're using paak or not. Nothing to worry about there though. It's not power hungry enough to drain your battery. Plus it's constantly monitoring and will go into deep sleep if needed.

As far as leaving your key fob, really nothing to worry about IMHO. I've had my car for almost 2.5 years, put on 52k miles and use paak almost exclusively.

It's left me unable to start my car exactly one time. But that was over a year and several software updates ago. And even then the backup start code worked. (the whole reason for the backup code)

And as far as being near your car and it being awake. Also not something to stress about. When I'm home, and in my kitchen I'm close enough to the garage that the phone will link up and the car's welcome lights will come on. But after 2-3 times of that happening the car will just ignore it and sleep until I open the door

I use PAAK exclusively and my kitchen and bedroom quite close to the garage. No problems or L2 drain massages. Have the car for 9 months

Honestly, I probably now just need to drive around my subdivision without my key fob, to see how it does. Oh, and test the backup code for the PaaK.

Alas, I am not 100% certain it has taken my choice of backup code properly. So, might have to reset it, just to confirm...

As an FYI, my backup code disappeared after one update. Now every time I get an update I check the backup code . Never had that problem again but I am not taking any chances since I use PAAK exclusively.

The whole car is not awake, only the circuits used in detecting the phone &/or fob. Remember: those systems have to be awake for the car to detect a fob, too!

Mach Es have VERY low parasitic drain. I have left mine untouched for 2 months and lost 2%.

If PaaK seems to be working fine, then leave the fob at home when you are staying close by. If you are carrying both, the car is seeing the fob, not the phone.

I just took a trip from DC to NYC. I left my fob at home.

Make sure you set up and know your B-pillar access code and emergency start code.

Once you are comfortable with PaaK, take the battery out of a fob and hide it in the car. Faraday bags may not stop the signal (cheap bags may not be fully-shielding) and the battery will be draining. It could well be dead just when you need it. Don’t worry about carrying a battery unless you want to. You can use the fob to drive by placing it into the slot at the front of the console. Check the manual for details and a picture.

Hide your fob in a Faraday bag (Walmart online). The MME will not know it’s there but you will. Only PAAK issue I’ve had in 10 months was my wife’s phone did not have notifications always on. Their car is always sensing. I forgot to turn off a compressor in my garage. When the compressor turned in the MME sent me a security alert. Please don’t worry about the milii KWs that are used.

i was in the same mode when i first started using PaaK. my suggestions:
  • leave your fob and phone far away from your car and test your door code and backup start passcode to make sure they work and put your mind at ease
  • take the battery out of one of your fobs and hide both in your car in different locations
  • test your backup start passcode regularly - especially after PowerUp updates
  • enjoy not having the fob in your pocket all the time
after 40+ years of carrying a key in various forms it took a bit of convincing but i've joined the fobless mob now. ?

I am asking for a debate with this comment, but I checked the average quiescent drain without PaaK on, and it was about 23mA. Nice! With PaaK on it was in the 55mA-ish range (IIRC). I read elsewhere on this forum that you want to be under 50mA to avoid the extra drain/charge cycle on the 12v battery. Yes, I have a small house and my phone was pretty much always connected to my car. I turned off PaaK and have been using the fob. Am I over-thinking it? Probably.

i have the same quiescent drain range as you note between with and without PaaK. the other number to watch that has allayed my concern is the LVB SoC when i first get in after a long sleep - it is staying above 80% so the quiescent drain isn't putting a lot of pressure on the LVB overall.

if the car sits for long periods (i.e. week+) with your PaaK in range the larger quiescent drain will affect it more so your driving frequency is something to consider.

i check every once in awhile now and it has stayed consistent.

I was originally in the camp of “I will always carry the key.” I set up PaaK so that I could use the second row of buttons in the app. I found that convenient so I started to use PaaK. Now, the only time I carry a key is when I go on a trip or I have to go for service. ??

Full disclosure: I have been stranded once. This was not the fault of PaaK. It was because a FordPass Support Guode insisted that I delete PaaK from the car after I repeatedly told him that I 1) was at work and 2) did not have a physical key with me. He basically yelled at me to “just do it” so I complied. When he toldme to start the car so that I could start setting up a new PaaK (which I had already done at least 80 times before, enough to lock my FP account for the rest of the previous week) and I asked him” how? I don’t have a physical key” he hung up on me. ?? Ford would not cover my taxi ride home or my PTO from work in order to get my key. ??

To be clear, my question about PaaK was not really about battery drain and such. More of being somewhat scared of not being able to start/drive the car, and my fob is miles away...

I have that happen exactly once and it wasn’t the fault of PaaK. ??
