...... I find the massive volume of anti-EV hysteria alarming. Then I remember something my father always told me: Truth is a defense.

the same BigCorp->'stretched' news->paid 'science'-> guided opinion pieces are rampant in the Solar Industry.

Always follow the money behind any 'scientific report' or study, look at what data is included, or excluded, and draw your own opinions.

mining/drilling, processing/refining, and distribution of gasoline seems obviously 'worse' than copper, aluminum, and lithium in batteries.... and wind/solar electricity is certainly cleaner than coal, nuclear, or natural gas electricity if you look at their cradel to grave footprints.... so why are we even arguing about EVs being even close to as dirty as ICE ?

Not going into details about how many years it takes to offset the pollutions created during EV manufacturing, as this is a complicated topic, not all pollutants are made equal, and nothing can replace the health of people working in cobalt mines. Also contrary to popular political opinion, CO2 is not a pollutant, in fact, vegetation is currently experiencing CO2 starvation.
BTW, science never tells anything, scientists do (who can be corrupt, biased, unqualified, etc.), but more often it's the journalists interpreting scientists, or cherry picking what to report and what not, or something worse than that.
So putting that aside, It's sufficient to say that it's a moot subject due to the fact that BEVs in their current form will never be anything but a small niche. Perhaps FC vehicles will manage to do better but they need to find a replacement for hydrogen, which has too many problems to be a viable energy source. The best we can hope for is the new generation of fuel cells that will work on oil or natural gas dramatically increasing efficiency and also reusing existing infrastructure.

Regarding the main sources of power, this map tells it all:

I think there's also the scandal angle - "What if EVs were actually worse than ICE? Scandalous!" Some people just want to believe the drama rather than understand. National Enquirer stuff.

Surprised they didn't mention the "grid can't handle it" argument.

I actually had a colleague on a call in the summer essentially say the above...I didn't challenge him then but the next time it's just the two of us I'll mention the MME. Let's see what happens...

Nowadays, I find it's safest to just assume we're being lied to about everything.
I think you are lying to me about that...

The article is missing mention of power loss between the plant and making it into your battery. Estimated at 6% loss to your house, and 10-30% for your charger (for L2 vs L1). It’s a detail that lingers with me because I’m just using a L1 charger since I don’t drive enough to need more. But it means my MME is only marginally better than my previous Prius.

best thing for my carbon footprint has been SARS-CoV2, and transitioning to nearly full time telework! Although I wouldn’t mind a chance to drive my MME a bit more.

Lies? Absolutely, at every turn. You guys are able to sift through the misinformation.
As long as the CoalOilGasUtility (COGU) coalition maintains its overwhelming power, the lies will persist. COGU is, after all, behind (ie. support and /or publish indirectly) most of the false propaganda the average apathetic, entitled, consummate, me person American "believes".
COGU will continue controlling alternative energy (Li, solid state, solar, other energy storage systems, etc.) and politicians as long as we allow them.
You must remember that most people are not as educated, learned, experienced or intelligent as the members of this forum are. And unfortunately, our overall level of education is not increasing. Wisdom is therefore a thing of bygone eras.
Too much of our time is consumed by our MME war with software, Ford and dealerships. I think we have an excellent chance at winning, once the HVBJBs are replaced.
The battle with COGU will only be won should we form a grassroots organization with which to do combat. I think there are enough good warriors among us to be victorious.

We/I are never considered in the alternative energy landscape.
Why?:
We produce more (solar)energy than we use.
98% of our EV(two) energy comes directly from the sun.
(our situation is somewhat unique, but since we can do it....)

There's no way big oil would ever lie to keep raking in record profits every year. That's just unbelievable

I don't care. I'm not trying to save the world, I'm only trying to save my wallet from having to buy gasoline. Mission Accomplished.

Same for the solar panels on my roof. They are there to save my wallet from the local utility. The fact that they also provide power for the Mustang is a bonus. :)
