Just received my 2022 GTPE on Wednesday and let me say this first... I love it.
I wanted to write a bit about how it compares to the other vehicles I cross-shopped and tested while waiting for my MME (ordered October 22nd, 2021); these include the Kia EV6 GT-Line AWD and Tesla Model 3 performance (M3P). I also threw in some comparisons to my prior vehicle, a 2019 Kia Stinger GT1 AWD (which I traded in for my MME). I tried to stay as objective as possible but cannot deny that some of the excitement may have seeped here and there.
Acceleration/handling:
Exterior: Clearly the bias will be stronger in this category, but I suppose you've already been reading everything I've written so far with a big prefacing āIMOā¦ā right?
Price:
So the MME GTPE was the clear winner for me.
And in case you were wondering, I did not cross shop the model Y because of the time it would take to arrive (until December of this yearā¦).
Sorry for the very long post. Here's a pic of my new pony, Cheers!
- Mach E: Thrilling on both accounts. Even at 40% battery SOC and cruising on the highway at around 70-75 mph, I did not experience a lack of acceleration to pass cars with significant confidence (easily got to 85-90mph which was more than enough for me). I've got to confess that I was a bit worried about the "5-second" power limit, but I have yet to experience a moment in my daily driving where that actually matters. Regarding handling, it does a fantastic job for the amount of weight it carries. The body roll is a lot less than I was expecting (in fact, even less than that of my stinger). I can move through corners, merge and turn at high speeds and not feel like Iām going to lose control. You do feel the weight of the car at times, that is unavoidable, but it certainly does not feel as much as youād expect.
- EV6: feels āOKā to drive. Has much less of the rawness and power I enjoyed from the Mach E, M3P and even my stinger (in fact, feels slower than the latter, which to me was somewhat of a disappointment and would've been a definite downgrade). Handling is also ok, but didn't feel any special. Turn radius is quite good though and possibly a bit better than the MME.
- M3P: undeniably the fastest of all. This being said, I was rarely ever in a position where I could easily (or safely) go over 80 mph. I do give the tesla the win in this category, but I definitely do so with a bit of hesitation as I do not tend to go to the track, so it doesnāt make a huge difference in my daily driving compared to the MME. Handling was also fantastic; I did lose a bit the back wheels on one occasion, but this may have been from me pushing it a bit harder than usual.
- 1st place: M3P, 2nd place: MME, 3rd place: EV6
- Mach E: I really like the Miko suede material. Nice to the touch and grippy. The B&O system perfectly adorn the front and feels classy and minimalistic; does lack some power as everyone else has noted. Really like the screen though it could be a bit quicker to respond at times. Seats backs are very comfortable. This was something I was worried about, especially with my lower back issues. However, the lumbar support is fantastic and the seat back bolstering is perfect. The seat bottom however, could be a bit larger for my legs (Iām 6ā1āā, so not even that tall) and have more bolstering. I do find that there is a bit more hard plastic materials than I was expecting for a car of this price (interior of B pillar, behind the B&O system in the dash).
- EV6: Overall Kia has the better interior materials and sound system of them all. This holds true for both my prior Stinger and the EV6. I will definitely miss my stingerās stock sound system (15 speaker, Harman Kardon, 720-watt). I did find the EV6 rear seats to have fantastic leg room (thanks to that large wheelbase), but head room is poor, almost as bad as my stinger. The Mach Eās rear seat leg room is less than that of the EV6, but the head room is way better. The EV6 frunk... a major disappointment. Also, didn't like the fact that mobile charger was not included either (c'mon Kia!).
- M3P: The white interior was very nice. I also think that the front of the cabin looks a bit more upscale than that of the Mach E. However, driverās seat felt hard and I simply couldnāt find a seating position were I felt as comfortable as I did/do in the Mach E. It was also a bit harder to get in and out. Lastly, the rear seats of the M3P are the smallest and less comfy of all of the cars I tested.
- 1st place: EV6, 2nd place: MME, 3rd place: M3P
Exterior: Clearly the bias will be stronger in this category, but I suppose you've already been reading everything I've written so far with a big prefacing āIMOā¦ā right?
- Mach E: It is the best-looking car of them all (also true according to my wife who beats anyone else's opinion anyway). I also love the fact that thereās barely any Mach Eās out there (especially GT's), whereas I see Teslas EVERYWHERE. As stated on many other posts, I do wish the tires were a bit wider, but I can live with that. The color (space white) is absolutely stunning!
- EV6: the least best looking. Would prefer my stinger or the Model 3ās exterior anytime. Paint quality was excellent. Definitely like way better its charger position compared to the Mach E's.
- Tesla: Donāt dislike the exterior as many do, but I am not a fan of the fact that there is essentially nothing (other than wheels) that looks different for the M3P compared to the other model 3ās or even the model Y. Also, the paint job for a car this price was suboptimal. I did not find significant exterior panel gaps as others have.
- 1st place: MME, 2nd place: Tesla, 3rd place: EV6
Price:
- As tested, my Mach E GTPE (no bluecruise or pano roof which I still feel VERY happy to have skipped) was $66k (price protected which the dealership honored without hassle, new MSRP is 69k). Tesla M3P was $62k, EV6 $62.6k (about 3k markup; could never find a single dealer selling at MSRP). As it is well known, the MME and EV6 would qualify for the federal tax credit (which I would qualify for) but the Tesla wouldnāt. Also, state EV rebate is 2.5k which would apply to all 3 EVs.
- 1st place: MME, 2nd place: EV6, 3rd place: M3P (ranked by overall package for price, not cheapest to most expensive)
So the MME GTPE was the clear winner for me.
And in case you were wondering, I did not cross shop the model Y because of the time it would take to arrive (until December of this yearā¦).
