Hi guys

Loving my new Mach-E Select here in Australia.

Apple CarPlay is really well integrated into the screen... coming from a Tesla, which didn't have CarPlay but did have very well-sorted software, I'm impressed.

One area I'm still unsure about - which Tesla did very well - is battery level predictions within Apple Maps.
Does this do a good job of accurately predicting your battery level at the end of a trip? Does it factor in things like temperature and traffic?

I'm keen to use CarPlay instead of the Ford maps if possible - but for long trips, I'd like to be sure I can trust the battery predictions appearing in Apple Maps.

Thanks all!

For me Apple Maps battery level prediction is always within 1-2% off of what I end up with at the end of my trip. 2-3 times per month I take a 2 hour, 111 mile drive and it is VERY accurate.

Same. I have A Better Route Planner (ABRP) connected to a Bluetooth OBD, feeding it continuous consumption and battery levels, and both ABRP and Apple Maps are within a couple percent correct for long 200+ mile trips.

I can't believe they are basically equally accurate (and both astoundingly better than the Ford navigation, which was regularly 10-15% off, which was material in planning what charging station we could get to!)

Also: imho, ABRP is totally worth the $5/mo for a trip, the easy re-routing while underway, and continuous monitoring/validation is super nice (like knowing that you need to go 74, not 78, to get to your next planned charger with > 10% left

Does ABRP only work with a Bluetooth OBD dongle, or can it access Ford's vehicle data the same way as Apple Maps does?

AFAIK it only works with OBD. I have no idea what their coverage in Australia is.

FWIW, I've found Apple Maps SOC predictions to be in line with what others see as well.

I will second as well, apple maps has been within 1-2% on trip projections for battery level. I also use ABRP with OBD for trips to ensure better charger selection

I use 3 apps on my trips, and I love long-distance trips in my MME(38K in 1yr/7mos.).
-Apple Maps(I love CarPlay)
-ABRP(A Better Route Planner)predictive time to charge and ALL DCFc chargers(I am sold on Tesla DCFCs)
-“Weather On The Way”- live and predictive weather, down to the hour, all along your planned route. I have avoided several storms and re-routed around those storms by using this app.

I rotate through the apps as I travel and it works very well for me.

Apple Maps is pretty accurate on predicting charge level for me as well, usually within 1 or 2%. How it gets there is a little odd, though. Usually, at the start of the trip, it will be a bit conservative, and then add battery % at arrival as I go, with bigger adjustments in low temps. It tends to settle on a fairly accurate estimate after 20 miles or so. But on almost every trip, I hit the estmated arrival battery % with 5 miles to go, and finish 1 or 2% lower than that.

I have a 180 mile round trip I take frequently. It is within 1-2 % on the way out. On the way back it is often off by 10% in the bad way (predicted arrival 26% , actual 16%). I’d say just like the cars gom .. all depends on if you drive the way it assumes.

I use Apple Maps for a roughly 700 mile trip I take a few times a year. The thing I may do differently is that I only map to my next charger instead of my final destination since I plan out stops using ABRP based on food choices and restrooms. It will consistently show a lower state of charge on arrival, say 5%, but then as the trip progresses, it will increase to a larger percentage, 10%.

I don't like how it is ultra conservative on adding charging stops.

For example, I had a 120 mile trip last week and the Ford GOM said I had 155 miles left. I put in my destination and Apple Maps said I either had to stop to charge halfway through, or take a different, more efficient route that would have taken 15 more minutes. I ignored this due to my experience with the cars battery level and route and switched over to Google Maps and arrived with a 15% charge and 30 miles still left.

If Apple would add a setting where you could set what you wanted your destination arrival percentage to be (like ABRP) it would be much better. Without it, I ususally switch over to Google Maps to avoid those charging stops when I would have made it home easily (30+ miles to spare).

ABRP with a bluetooth dongle is the way to go over long trips that require charging. But if you are going somewhere close and won't require a charge Apple Maps is pretty accurate (but you will run into it wanting to charge more often which is annoying when you know you have enough to get there).

I don't find Apple Maps to be conservative at all. I've posted this several times over the last year. Every time I enter my destination, I usually get three choices. One is stopping to charge with Tesla chargers, one with EA chargers and one not stopping at all if the car has more than 1% charge left when I get to my destination. I'm leaving for Sacramento airport this morning and here are my choices. I always take the route that does not include charging and leave my car at the airport on one of the free chargers while I'm away. By the way, my car has a 52% SOC right now.
