Their interface and speed of updates is unmatched. ---are these updates always improvements-or beta fixes-or Tesla imposed degradations (limited fast charging capabilities-sudden battery capacity reductions)-or other-or any/all of the above?

Yup agreed. As I stated earlier they are both good in their own ways. They could both learn a lot from the other.
While I have a historical preference for Ford (30 years of truck/SUV ownership I've been very happy with), I wouldn't have any problem buying a Tesla if I actually liked the product better. I just don't with what they're offering so far. I don't care much for their shapes and rounded-roof styling. I prefer more of an SUV shape.

And frankly, I consider a vehicle to be 90% mechanical (where I think Ford excels) and 10% technological (where Tesla excels). For a BEV, maybe that gap shrinks to 80-20, but it's still mostly mechanical. So I'd still trust Ford more to build a solid, dependable vehicle. But it doesn't mean that Tesla can't.

Similarly though, I think it's easier for Ford to catch up on technology/software than it is for Tesla to catch up on mechanical build quality. And even if they don't get it right immediately, OTA updates make it far easier to get there, seamlessly for the driver. Whereas mechanical fixes are a PITA because they take a trip(s) into the service department.

But it's good that they each push each other, as well as the other dozen or so major manufacturers out there. We need competition, especially in the BEV segment to improve certain key aspects and bring the prices down to make them more viable.

So far from my experience it's always been improvements. Most impressively, some improvements are driven by requests to Elon. I'm looking forward to the one starting to roll out now that adds some additional control over auto lock (was requested by many on Twitter to have the option to exclude autolock while at home), adds the side repeater cameras to the backup camera view, battery preconditioning on route option for 3rd party charging stations and some additional sentry mode viewer improvements. This will be the 3rd update I've received this month with improvements.

They have actually pushed range and performance improvements via OTA (for free) in the past.

This is one of the things I hope Ford copies from Tesla. Quick relevant free updates OTA that address improvements/issues that the customer base is requesting.

Tesla OTA updates are usually improvements, additions to functionality, additions of Apps functionality. There have been some updates to 'fix' things but in general some functionality is being added.

This. I really hope Ford mirrors Tesla's responsiveness to Buyer feedback. Tesla is so quick to turn around and add features from just someone Tweeting 'Can we get Spotify on the touchscreen' and similar quality of life improvements.

And, I do hope as the MachE gets on the road, that Ford is able to squeeze out better range that what is being advertised on the launch specs. If we get even 20 more miles from an OTA update, that's pretty huge.

Yes, it's really changed my thinking around cars in general. Previous cars if something didn't work the way I preferred or an option was missing it was "well maybe I can modify it to make it work" or "I hope they get that integrated by the next time I buy a car". Now it's "wonder if they will add that in the next month or two". It's hard to explain but there is an excitement every time the "update available" notification pops up. If Ford can nail that... That's a HUGE step in the right direction.

The comment was in relation to saying that Ford is run by adults while insinuating that Tesla isn't. One of the measures of how well a company is ran is it's Market Cap and stock price.
But Tesla is run by a child, if you think about it. What child doesn’t play with spaceships and wants to visit mars... or builds tunnels for their trains... or had stupid names for their dolls... or pretends they knows how to hit a J, but end up being the laughing stock at school.... or throws tantrums in public when they don’t get their way? Electric Jesus is the biggest baby out there.

As for the stock market being a measure of how well a company is run... Time Warner called, they want to know if you’ll take AOL off their hands for the $164b they paid for it back in 2001. Lol

Guess Ford is run by a child that likes to play with toy cars!!

Elon is one of those guys that's too smart for his own good. The type that is a visionary but has terrible social skills (Steve Jobs was another). However, you can't deny the impact Elon has had on the car industry, and even more-so the space industry. He disrupted the entire automotive industry with Tesla.

Now Germany, once the Leader, is flailing to catch up (and doing a fairly terrible job at it). GM has not impressed me with any of their offerings. The MachE is the first EV that made me take a look at a car other than Tesla. I'm still a little disappointed in the 0-60 speed (other than GT) and range compared to Tesla. But good on Ford for taking a close look at Tesla and making a car that can compete.

To denigrate a highly successful individual as childish with the childish tactic of name calling is a little ironic, don't you think? He clearly needs to be knocked down a peg, and without a doubt Tesla is way overvalued right now. However, he is still responsible for reviving the both the image of EV's and the market for them. I don't like him and feel sorry for those that work for him, but I won't try to diminish his achievements by applying childish labels to him.

I never called Elon a child. However, he does immature things.

(Yes I know you are replying to someone else, but I feel a need to defend myself since some took my comments personally for some reason.)
