Is there any way to tell if my car has the SSM without taking it to a dealership? I just took delivery 4 days ago, built at the end of April.
Once paak is set up try the walk away lock. If you get a notification on your phone, the SSM software update has been applied. If not you need to take it in to get it done.

I just hit 1,000 miles on the odometer. I have never used the fob except for my drive home from the dealer and when I had it a the shop having PPF installed.

For me I’ve found that it’s 100% effective to have my phone in hand, phone “on” & FordPass opened.
75% effective, phone in hand, screen “off”.
25 % effective phone in pocket.
5100 miles here. And I'd say 90% success screen off in pocket.

That’s perfect, Thank You! I wish there was a way to see ahead of time, but this is a good way to know. I’m a little scared to try it because of how rough adding the car to the app was. I’m concerned I have to have the modem SSM done.

Either way I’ll get the dealer to check at some point, I’m just not ready to part with it just yet.

This is my story - At the dealership in Vineland NJ my iPhone12 could not be configured. No 5G network and weak Wi-Fi signal at the dealership lot, but once I got back to Northern NJ, with strong 5G and high speed broadband Wi-Fi signals.

I attempted the configuration process again: closed all the apps on the phone one by one; did a shut down and power up; charged up the phoned battery; reset the MyKey by erasing all previous keys ... and miraculously everything worked! I have not used the fob since. I am not IT expert but the lack of 5G network and poor Wi-Fi signals probably inhibited the configuration process. I have no issues with the Mach-e but Ford needs to promote a conducive environment at their dealership lot. They don't even have a dc-Fast charger but a meager L2 charger.
You can buy a little DC unit for your home:
https://www.amazon.com/Delta-Wallbox-Networked-Commercial-Charging/dp/B06ZY6N3S6
It might cost $10,000 to install, though. The larger units are (way) north of $50,000. Even the dealerships have to save up to buy a few of these. It's why only the top few percent of dealers have them. They are the only ones that can afford them.

Save a few thousand if you don't need CHAdeMO or networking, or if you don't have a 3-phase AC supply.

Just trying to help out my fellow Mach-E Wannabuys. :)

I just got my car on Thursday. I had a little trouble getting it to activate in Ford Pass, but it eventually went through. I called support while I was waiting and they said there was an SSM on the car which could cause that problem, but it did eventually work. Since then everything has been great! Wireless CarPlay works flawlessly and the fob works just like it should. I have the option to enable PAAK, but I have been afraid to do it. I’ve seen so many bad stories on here about it not working and potentially causing issues with wireless CarPlay.

I’m leaning towards trying it this week, if only to set the backup code. Then maybe disabling it if it causes issues.

What does everyone think?

First, the process to enable PAAK is not intuitive, its complicated. Ol, I got it to work maybe 90% of the time but when it doesn't work, it requires some trouble shooting. FordPass, needs to be active on your phone. Sometimes requires restating phone. I think BT signal maybe weak. All kinds of stuff can happen operating wirelessly .

Having said all that I use PAAK 100% but it may not be for everyone. As a former chip head I am used to troubleshooting.

BTW: WHAT IS SSM?

Basically a service bulletin.

SSM 49730 - 2021 Mustang Mach-E - April 9, 2021 - Phone As A Key Concerns Of Bluetooth Disconnected, UnableTo Start, Backup Code Needed And/Or Key Not Detected

Some 2021 Mustang Mach-E vehicles may exhibit phone as a key concerns of Bluetooth disconnected, unable to start, backup code needed and/or key not detected. This may be due to the software configuration in the remote function actuator module (RFA). To correct the condition, reprogram the RFA module using the latest software level of the appropriate Ford diagnostic scan tool. For claiming, use causal part 14G617 and M-time.

I forgot to mention there are a couple of issues with using PaaK. There have been several times where my car needed to be moved. At a party, family gathering, office etc. It is much easier to hand my fob to someone so they can move the car for me. Not comfortable giving them my phone....

Also loaning out the vehicle to pick up guests at the airport or running errands is problematic when only using PaaK.

Nail in the coffin for me was the vary angry phone call from my wife when PaaK didn't work. It let her in the car and pull around to the loading area. Loaded up and she got back inside the running car and it said key not detected and she was stuck there blocking traffic. That was a bad day for PaaK in our household....

Went camping again. Fob and phone stay in the car. Codes be the way to go.

I am not talking about dcFast chargers at home. There is a major difference between an homeowner and a major auto brand such as Ford ... why can't Ford have dcFast chargers at their dealerships rather than sending their customers with their newly delivered Mach-e only at 40% charged?

Initially, I found PAK frustrating. Working better now that I take my phone out of m pocket as I approach the car.

Just got it this past Thursday! It was built late April.
The dealer should have applied all the outstanding and applicable SSMs and updated the software before delivery. Yours should be up to date.

That shouldn’t be a problem for me, no one drives my car but me lol. My husband occasionally :D

Ya I hope so, I just wish I knew for sure. The dealership was good, but I didn’t get the sense that they would do all that.
