TSB 21-2189 - June 18 2021 - Front Luggage Compartment Hood Closing Effort

Model:

Ford
2021 Mustang Mach-E

Issue: Some 2021 Mustang Mach-E vehicles may exhibit a concern where the front luggage compartment hood is hard to close due to air becoming trapped in the front luggage compartment while closing the hood, increasing the closing effort.

Action: Follow the Service Procedure to correct the condition on vehicles that meet all of the following criteria:

• 2021 Mustang Mach-E
• Front luggage compartment hood closing efforts

Warranty Status: Information Only – Not Warrantable.

Repair/Claim Coding

Causal Part:IN
Condition Code:42

Service Procedure

To properly close the front luggage compartment hood, apply closing force as the hood is lowered. Verify the hood is fully closed. Allowing the hood to close on its own weight may not be enough effort to properly latch the front luggage compartment hood. No additional adjustments are required for the hood/latch.

END TSB
This is also another update to the SSM about this along with a video link to show it being closed.

That is true. I also noticed that. You can't just let the hood drop down. It is quite annoying because if it doesn't fully close, then you need to pull the open latch again to unlock it. You definitely need to use pressure and swing down hard to get that thing to close.

I use this method - quieter than letting it drop and works every time..... just make sure you give the final push with a flat palm at the front leading edge.

I've pushed like that to latch a few times. I don't like the force that it takes to get it to latch. It feels like it could end up causing it to deform or something.

I usually just push down a little extra force with my fingers from about a foot from being closed and it latches every time.

yeah I read in the manual to let the hood close by it's own weight 10-14 inches above closed position, that's certainly not working

Maybe I don’t have a feel for it but throwing it down isn’t working for me, only forcing it down after it’s down.

I use this same method. My dad closed the fronk yesterday at his shop by kinda throwing it down with force from about halfway open position and I physically cringed at the sound. Closing it gently then applying a small amount of pressure to engage the latch seems so much better for it than slaming it.

Another forum user reported that applying some lubricant to the latch helped. Lithium grease is what was used, if I remember correctly. YMMV.

This does not work on mine. It needs much more force.

Yep, applied it to the door control arms too, they love to retain water.

Started with : https://amzn.to/3xXW9Ij (White Lithium)

Now using: Super Lube Dielectric / Synthetic: Patented, supposedly lasts 4x longer than other ones, impervious to road salt and elements per the label. Also more viscous, so it'll stick around in hotter weather

Okay, but can we talk about the guy's expression in the video? His face is just SCREAMING, "This is how you close a hood, you idiots. Watch me. I shouldn't have had to have shown you how to do this. You're too stupid to own this car; return it at once."

That's the best thing I've seen all day.

You could add a hood scoop so the air doesn't get trapped and it closes easier. Bonus is the heads you'll turn as people try to come to terms with why you have a hood scoop on your electric car.

You'll see a mix of both white lithium and Super Lube Synthetic (preferred) on the control arms, bolts and area where they connect to car, hood, and back doors.

It turned very heavy doors into feeling a lot lighter, even if placebo effect.

This has to make it through winters in NJ where they are very liberal with the amount of road salt applied. Frunk closes easier. Used to have to push it close even after slamming down. Now as long as I push it closed, latches every time. I did slather that area up in Synthetic Super Lube.

Found it easier to apply with a glove, apply the lube to your finger, then get in the bonnet close area and apply so it gets to both clasps. The small opening makes it hard to get beyond the first if you apply from the bottle.

These areas are already retaining water and condensation even 24 hours after rain, figured play it safe than sorry where I'm located.

All I know is I won't be here in 12-18 months complaining about a rusted control arm or trunk attachment to the car.

No more condensation around the mount. Took care of the pooling in trunk area with a quick cheap ceramic treatment. No need for CQuartz when it's the trunk area. Meguiar's Fast Finish would be just as good.

Rear Door, lathered up on all 3 areas. Open's easier (possibly placebo effect) and sure as hell won't be having control arm issues this winter.

Can get a video of me shutting the hood, it used to be a two step process (slam then push down for second click) now I just slam the sucker closed.

How about opening it...I have to have car in park and driver door open to double pull the Frunk open.
