Someone may have already posted this, but I was underwhelmed by the sound system until I discovered it was in "surround" sound mode. I switched it to "stereo" and it is much, much better.

Try increasing the volume using your phone, too.
The volume control on the phone has no effect when using it wirelessly.

You have mid bass and treble settings, like most cars. I really like the B and O sound system when streamed from my Tidal app in full fidelity.
Would be nice if the eq settings actually stuck. Seems every time I check them they have gone back to default. Annoying, surely easily fixed, but I guess it's not a priority.

They usually stick if you turn Personal Profiles off. Seems to struggle to fully implement specific personal profiles correctly. I just gave up and turned them off, meaning everything just stays the way you last left it rather than attempting (and often failing) to change it all to the specific profile each time.

Maybe not for iPhone, but Android does have a separate gain used for Bluetooth connections.
Apple CarPlay uses Wi-Fi for the wireless connection not Bluetooth so you can stream high resolution audio where you can’t with Bluetooth unless it’s Bluetooth 4.0 which Sync 4a is not.

Ah fair enough. I lost track of the fact that the poster was using CarPlay and not Bluetooth.

Something else to think about is setting it to stereo and surround and seeing how they sound because in my 2013 fusion I can't get the surround to sound quite right no matter what I do so I leave it in stereo mode. Also the settings are completely different. Like in stereo I have the more traditional bass 2, mid 1, and treble 3 type setting and fader on 2 notches to the back. When I set it to surround I have to do like 2 bass, full midrange, and maybe 3 or 4 treble with fader in the middle.

But no matter how much I messed with it I just couldn't get the surround to sound quite as good, I don't know if it's how it gets processed or what.

Also in your apps make sure the audio is set to max bit rate. I use Pandora and it has a setting for audio quality in there.

Maybe it’s a language thing. We have different words for that. What I mean is that the volume goes to max 30 but it’s not very loud when connected to CarPlay. When I play the radio the volume 30 is deafening loud.
That is very strange as my radio and CarPlay are about the same volume. I know everyone has a different idea of what is loud but for me, a normal listening level is around 15 on the sync volume control. If I turned it up to 30, both the radio and CarPlay would be extremely loud and something I would not be playing while driving around.

The Bang & Ølufsen is one of the better auto audio system capable to decode the most updated sophisticated hi-fi coded music. I am not an audiophile but to my understanding if you playback either a FLAC (free lossless audio Codec) or ALAC (Apple lossless audio Codec) formats, both of which are compressed meaning no information is lost, it will sound indeed spectacular ... but if your music format is the older mp3 (non hi-resolution) lossy compressed format, or non high resolution AAC, or uncompressed WAV etc ... it may not sound that great. Same for over the air broadcasts ... it depends on the quality of the transmission.
The B&Ø audio in the Mach-E sounds way better than the much costlier Burmester system in the Mercedes or BMW's Harmon Kardon ... but it still falls short of Lexus' Mark Levinson or the truly untouchable Bentley's Naim !!!

One other thing: from what I’ve read Wireless Apple CarPlay streams using to the vehicle audio system over WiFi (not sure what container/format/compression). From what I’ve read, music through Wireless Apple CarPlay should be equivalent to connecting your device via USB. Bluetooth is apparently only used for setup of the wireless CarPlay connection.
I do not think that is correct. I think it uses BT.

If you use the volume buttons on your phone, it should get louder.

So, I actually experimented - I turned off Bluetooth and music continued to play. You can try this yourself to confirm. I’m using a iPhone 12 Pro Max running iOS 14.6.

Apparently it uses bluetooth to do the initial setup/pairing, but once the phone is paired, the software running on each end communicates via the wifi band for the data transmission.

Android Auto does the same.

How Does Android Auto Wireless Work?

Most connections between phones and car radios use Bluetooth. This is how most hands-free calling implementations work, and you can also stream music over Bluetooth. However, Bluetooth connections don't have the bandwidth required by Android Auto Wireless.

In order to achieve a wireless connection between your phone and your car, Android Auto Wireless taps into the Wi-Fi functionality of your phone and your car radio. That means it only works with vehicles that have Wi-Fi functionality.
