I called Ford Customer service today to get information on my Mach E order and the representative told me that the chip shortage is getting better. She said Ford is producing 1 million chips a week. (Those are her words not mine). She said the average wait time for any vehicle order is about 8-12 weeks, but because of the chip shortage that it is about double that. I know people have been waiting MUCH longer for their vehicles, but if there truly is a 16-24 week range now, that would be great news for many people on this thread.
Ummmm, that representative is not the sharpest knife in the kitchen or perhaps she was just trying to get rid of you because Ford does not produce or manufacture any chips for any vehicle in the Ford lineup and this also applies to every brand out there.

I know especially when it is such a critical topic reported by such a creditable source. I feel childish right now. No more joking around. Welcome to the forum some may be here to chill and just joke around a bit. If you highlight their name you can ignore them.

If you do some light reading in Google, you will find info that will explain what the big deal is about chips in cars, and why a shortage is such a problem.

Those chips are used for so many operations that it is hard to believe.

Here is what VW says about the Golf. Then multiply that out.

A Golf already has more than 50 control devices equipped with up to 70 semiconductors. Last year, 982,495 Golfs rolled off production lines around the world. They already have more than 3.4 billion semiconductors on board – and this number is increasing.
Just Google "how many semiconductors in an Apple I Phone 12?

I'd tell you, but you won't believe me.:)

I can't tell 100% if you're being serious or not. Ford sales in April was just under 200,000 cars, but somehow they're 'producing' 4,000,000 chips per month?

Let's put aside them producing it or not producing it, the statement is ridiculous as a whole. Even if they 'ordered' 4 million chips that really doesn't mean anything since they won't be getting 4 million chips.
Each car requires ~1,400 chips.

One thing to remember with modern cars is the need for redundancy in the vehicles. Almost every system in a modern car is controlled by a chip or a combination of them. Lot of these are critical and cannot fail while in use like - chips that manage lane centering, adaptive cruise control, autonomous safety systems, displays in the car, braking, etc.

Automakers build a lot of redundancy into the vehicles to ensure no risk is passed on consumers and buy chips that have some of the highest reliability ratings in the semiconductor industry.
That's why there are so many chips in a car and also why it's hard to ramp up manufacturing of these chips. They are designed to last for as long as the typical service life of a car and need to be made by a fab with a process and capabilities that meets the strict reliability requirements.
