We helped @OutofSpecKyle by providing our very own Blucifer for this mega comparison video. We hope to have our own comparison video out next week from the perspective of Mach-E owners.

Grab the popcorn, this is a long and detailed video!

Yeah, it was our Mach-E. We also helped by getting them the Polestar 2 and we drove some of the cars for the B-Roll (extra) footage.

Not gonna hack on the video because a lot of it was informative and itā€™s a good, comprehensive comparison. My issue is with some of the handling comments. Specifically that the 4X is somehow juvenile in itā€™s tendency to oversteer on corner exit and thus, slower than the ID.4.

Sorry, not buying it. Iā€™ve never driven the AWD ID but the rwd version was yawn inducing to say the least. The chassis feels competent, but thatā€™s it. Numb steering, so-so grip, and drum rear brakes for godā€™s sake. And understeer for days. Extra AWD power isnā€™t magically changing those traits.

In comparison, the FE overnight loaner and SR awd we drove prior to ordering our 4X displayed surprisingly good steering feedback as well as a very neutral handling balance, even with the horrible OEM Michelin all-season, gripless rubber. Not too much over or understeer, just a good neutral balance with oversteer available only if provoked.

However, I canā€™t stress enough how much of a difference ordering ours with the $250 optional summer tires made. They are Continental Grand Touring summer tires so theyā€™re not as dedicated as a set of Max Performance Pilot 4S or Conti ExtremeContact Sports but they have much better lateral/longitudinal grip and steering feel than the standard Michelin A/S tires. We are still going to order some lightweight 20x8.5s with 245/45s soon, but in the meantime they will suffice.
The sidewall design is odd to say the least though:

Interesting video, had no idea how bad the Premium 4X performance was through the twisties, is that true to reality like in the video? Seemed like any sort of fast turn in the mountains it was just squealing tires like crazy

He's gunning it in the corner and doing it on purpose. They seem to like the way it does that, listen to the giggles when he does it haha

True but then also said people would think it's fast because of that, but it's really going slow. Even said the ID.4 was faster through the corners

No, itā€™s not that bad at all. Thatā€™s a case of someone overdriving the OEM A/S tires and then conflating that fact with bad handling traits. Would have been far more honest to just say ā€œHey, the chassis is really good but Ford really went too far down the efficiency path with the tires.ā€ They mention it, but donā€™t really emphasize that fact enough for lay people IMO.

See my comments above about our 4X with the $250 optional summer tires. Donā€™t get me wrong, a GT350 the 4X will never be, however, there is a reason MT, C&D, Throttle House and many others have praised the handling characteristics. And none of them seem to be too enamored with the ID.4 handling. But, whatever.

Yeah, I just wouldn't want to deal with summer tires on a more "normal" performance car. On a GT, BMW M5, whatever, sure

Thought for sure they would fix this with the 2022s, but Tirerack still shows the same crappy 225s on a 2022 MME. My wife's MINI has 225s, what's the deal Ford?

The Mach-E handling issue is so easy to fix. A good performance tire in 245-50R19. Problem solved.

Are the stock tires really that screechy?

And also, does the Premium require any special caution on narrow twisty roads?

That video makes the car seem a little more squirrely than I would've guessed...

It really isn't that bad. You apply a lot of power in middle of a curve and you can get that.
