Yep, trutolife27 said yesterday they were First edition models order to be made and go to different Advertising sectors. Probably around 100 cars.

I would guess these were to be more like show room cars but unlike the Dealer demos, they would not have to wait 4 months / 4,000 miles to sell them to a customer.
Likely planned to be display/demo vehicles for various auto shows, auctions and press events. Think MCACN, Barrett-Jackson, Good Guys etc.

There was a First Edition at Barrett-Jackson here in January. It was on display but not available to drive.

The only thing to really get your knickers in a bunch is someone who would have liked to have a First Edition and was unable to trying to get one of these (and missing out for some reason).
One addition to that... "someone who would have liked to have a First Edition and gotten it in 2020".

In my case, that's the important part. The red stitching and calipers would be cool too but that's not why I'm interested in upgrading. It's getting it months sooner so it delivers in 2020 that holds some value to me (since I qualify for an extra $1500 tax credit).

VERY interesting.
Your info aligns with my long standing theory that the First Editions could be built right along side Premium Editions. Like you point out, the FE package is an option group....not it's own unique model.

When you really think about it. History will record that the 2021 model year Premium Edition Mach E were the first Mach Es to be assembled and shipped. Some of those will have special appearance items to commemorate the occasion and be labeled as such. Hence the First Edition moniker.

It would be very interesting to know if you currently have an order for the K3S and attempted to add the 301A package....would it be allowed? And if so, would that change or affect the scheduled built sequence of your vehicle in any way.
I did send an email to my Ford dealer, we'll see.

I’m trying to upgrade too but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

Just spoke with Ron Heiser, chief program engineer for Mach-E, thousands of First Editions sold. Wouldn’t say exactly how many.
He and I were looking at cars together. The new First edition was already slated to be built first before the other orders are allocated. They was cars scheduled to be built and going to the adverting sector, now there is no need.

Many times ford just scraped whole units, brand new cars instead of selling. This time they are giving mach-e customers a change to get a first edition instead of just not using the parts. Who even gets one great job rather someone be happy then not using the parts.

That makes sense. And it's logical that Ford actually sell them to customers now. They just needed a fairer way to allocate them to customers than what this myopic social media campaign appears to be doing (that sounds like some 20yo dreamed up with no regard to how all the loyal customers already waiting in line would feel).

Knowing that these will probably be the very first handful of actual customer vehicles off the line does lessen my desire to try and get one though. No matter how much they try to make sure they're perfect, the first ones off the line seem more likely to have some issues.

My dealer rep received a notice from the Ford regional agent last Thursday basically saying "Hey. Some First Editions are becoming available so speak up if any of your customers are interested." He then sent me a text message instructing me to call him ASAP if I was interested.

I dont think my dealer gets any special treatment compared to other dealers so I have to believe that message went out to all of them. Or perhaps just those who are EV certified?

At any rate....it appears an effort was made to reach out to existing customers first. Perhaps a weak effort but an effort none the less.

I hold out hope that you will get good news from your dealer shortly....

That's a much better approach than this cryptic social media "clues" thing that went out to the general public. Unfortunately, sounds like very few dealers "reached out".

I betcha if Ford had just sent out an email to the first 1000 people on the Mach-e reservation list (and their designated dealers) with something like this, they'd have gotten enough to sell them all... "Hey, we've got a handful of FEs that became available for 2020 delivery. But this chance has a very short fuse! If interested, contact your dealer immediately. The deadline to request an upgrade your order is Tuesday. If we have more takers than FEs available, they will be awarded in reservation order."

A few points about this for everyone still upset about this, and yeah, I do think it was dumb and poorly executed, but . . . .
- My dealer KNEW I wanted a FE if any became available. I bugged him along with sending emails to MME folks at Ford. I followed up weekly and after orders were closed For the FE. And guess what, I got a call offering me the option to switch the week before this nonsense. So dogged persistence paid off. - along with a good relationship with a dealer that either cared, or was tired of my nagging.
- we have found out these aren’t additional cars and were going to be made anyway. So your car won’t be back any further in the line because of this.
- in fact, you may have moved up a bit if people like me made a switch because my original reservation was at 9:55 pm the night of launch. #10004247. So you moved up at least probably by one.
If this is all it took for you to jump ship, maybe you really didn’t want the car after all, and Ford’s marketing silliness gave you a good excuse.
I know a lot of you are mad, but even if I had missed out I would still be anxious for my premium to arrive.

With as active as this thread is we might want to start a poll ....

to find out if there's anyone not trying to upgrade to an FE.

Or is it just me?

Odds are surely higher (for wanting an FE) for those that are already paying $57,700 for a Premium AWD ER. Then it's only an extra $1600 from there.
