the heat pump that you can shrink down to car size? I dunno.

Now granted, my heat pump was selected for use in Virginia, not Yellowknife. Mine definitely DOES NOT work below 20 degrees.
The volume of your car cabin compared to the output of the heat pump should actually make it easier to have a larger heat pump output per cubic yard of conditioned space.

In fact, I remember reading something about the Tesla heat pump and that it can work down to the extreme cold, because even at it’s most inefficient it can still output heat equal to the amount of energy put in, same as a resistive heater. Basically like running your fridge with the door open all day, you would still have a net heating effect. If it’s oversized enough, that could still be a lot of heat if it’s running constantly. That was the explanation I read at least.

I would trade. I've opened the frunk twice in the two months I've had the car. The first time to just peek in there to see what it looks like, and last week when I showed my girlfriend it had a frunk and to proe it wasn't along the lines of blinker fluid and muffler bearings. She was very, very skeptical until I showed her!

A heat pump is simply an air-conditioner... with a reversing valve. The only space needed would be to add the valve (since we already have AC). No need for much space at all and certainly no need to delete the frunk.

Whether the heat pump quits working at +20° or -4°, the fact that it can quit working at all, when I most need heat, means I don’t want it. I’ll keep my frunk and electric space heater.
Too many people think the heat pump is going to solve all their range anxiety problems. But for my it would cause temperature anxiety problems.

Me personally, I'd prefer a heat pump setup with a resistance heater as backup. Like some here, it seldom gets cold enough here to prevent efficient use of a heat pump.
This here is the correct answer. A reversing valve is a pretty small addition, and no matter where you live, if it is cold enough to use the heat ever, you have some days in the 35°F to 55°F range, where the heat pump would work great, and you would get back a ton of your range lost to heating. I think there are some people on here that don't want it because it is something that Tesla stans use to argue their superiority.

Electric resistance heat is a simple heating method, and I don't disagree with Ford opting for using it exclusively in their first really serious EV. However whenever the first real redesign of the MME is done, Ford is going to look really silly if they don't go heat pump plus some backup heat method.

I would think it would have both. Resistive heating elements are cheap and I would hope the heat pump would have resistive aux heat.

The Heat Pump on BMW i3s was overrated. How i know? I had two of those BMWs, one without the heatpump, so can tell the difference was not much. Not a noticeable saving on electrons plus it made a noise and was extra weight.

I would much rather have heated steering wheel on BMW i3 than a heat pump. Any similar technology on Mach-E would be a waste of $$$.

What’s the potential gain with a heat pump? I’m not sure I understand the draw to have one in place of the e-heat. I rarely use heat anyway though, most of the time it’s just the seat heater unless it’s in the low 20s. Even then, with pre conditioning, I don’t need to turn on the heater until about 40mins into my hour commute and I only have it on for a minute or two max at a time. I guess if having a heat pump would keep winter range much closer to summer range without adding much cost to the purchase price it could be a draw for me.. but I drove 120mi per day minimum and the winter range hasn’t been an issue at all. Frunk for me.

But if I have to carry around both, then I’m carrying extra weight. This the heat-pump range gain is whittled away further. So I’m happy yo just stick with e-heat.

Central Texas owner here. Screw a heat pump, where are my damn ventilated seats? I voted Frunk. We use it almost every grocery run for the heavier boxed stuff.

There are cars that have a frunk and a heat pump.

Why can't it have both?

If the reason is cost the car price should be less than the car that has both.

Where does that cutoff lie? Ability to hold 1 grocery bag? 1 can of V8? 1 shrimp? When does it lose its usability?
Frunk has to at minimum hold two sets of wet, muddy chest waders. Ability to hold the bagged game would be welcome. ???

It can fit several dozen squeaky toys, not sure what else a pup would need!
