I think it has been about 118 years now...... I have seen nothing but problems with the early builds. How many years has Ford been building cars?......
My car is a very early build (pre OKTB) and reliability has been stellar. Very very well built vehicle. Only issue in my first 26,000 miles has been the 1.7.1 OTA. That messed up my car somehow and and took several hours to correct. Point being.......when it left the factory it was done right.
The quantity of adhesive isn't the issue......at least it doesn't appear that way. The recall instructions for the windshield show two basic conditions. The photo on the left show the adhesive separating cleanly from the painted surface and that represents a faulty bond. The photo on the right shows the adhesive bonding securely to the paint which is ideal.... How did Ford not know how much glue is needed to install the windshield and Pano roof? ....
Apparently, the adhesive didn't always bond to the painted surface as intended. There could be several reasons for this. Could be an out-gassing issue, could be that activating primer wasn't used or could be the flash time was exceeded. I don't think we know all the facts. If I had to guess....the line speed wasn't appropriate for the flash time necessary for the adhesive to bond to the painted surface or for the primer used to prepare for the fixed glass to be installed.
Fixing this for a windshield is simple enough. Remove the windshield and peel the adhesive away. If it comes away cleanly then that is proof of a bad bond. According to the dealer rep....none of the cars they have done so far had the adhesive pull away cleanly. (Which means those windshields were secured quite well originally)
The panoramic roof is more difficult because Ford doesn't want that thing removed because it is much more complicated and difficult to get it installed correctly. So, they came up with a band-aid type fix and that is what you see in the instructions. The reason for the primer is to get a good bond to the painted surface and the cure time for that primer is critical. There is a narrow window to get the adhesive applied or band-aid might not be successful.
