Hi Everyone!

I am new to EV's but love the design of the Mach E and am in the market for a larger car than the one I own which is a two-door Mini Cooper. I was going to get a Bronco but Ford crapped the bed with the roll-out leading me from the Bronco forums to here.

I am looking to buy a car off a dealer lot as soon as possible. I have 30k downpayment (I've been saving up). I am willing to buy a car from anywhere. I mean anywhere. I live in New York but would fly to Atlanta to pick up the car and drive it back if I had to. I AM JUST NOT WILLING TO PAY A DIME OVER MSRP.

Below are the notes I have written down to help me with my search. Am I missing anything?
  • Call dealerships with car in stock
  • Ask if they are willing to sell the car for MSRP. If no, hang up the phone.
  • Looking for a late 2021 build date (preferably past August)
  • Don't let them try to add on any extra fees or sell me on some BS a lowjack system for a car that can be found on a map via the app.
  • I will not be getting an extended warranty so won't let them sell me on that either
  • Ensure the car is as up to date as possible (can do this by seeing if the frunk can be opened digitally)

Am I missing anything? I'm super nervous as this will be my first time buying a new car and easily will be the most expensive purchase I've ever made.

Any advice or tips will be appreciated. Even if it's you telling me how stupid I am. Call me anything but ugly and I'll accept it :)
Check the Ford.com inventory; its not completely accurate, but its close. Most of the time it'll say whether its in transit or on the lot. Expand the search to 500 miles and choose some other zip codes if you're willing to drive for it.

I placed an order in October and was willing to wait, but kept checking the inventory pretty much daily and found one 45 minutes from me, exactly as I ordered. I called the dealership the next day when they opened and asked him to confirm it was on the lot. They originally had a $5k markup, which he dropped to $1k with me just asking how flexible they were on it. For me, it was worth it (and I made that back in my trade-in). I gave him a deposit over the phone and was there the next day driving it home.

If they have it in stock, make sure to tell him you are a few hours hours away, the further you are, the easier it is for them to help you over the phone without pressuring you to come down. Also, be willing to leave a refundable deposit over the phone and let them know that. Then get down there as soon as you can, they will get other people calling about the same car; you want to drive it off before they do.

Good luck.. and enjoy it when you get it!

(Here's 6 black Premiums available within 500 miles of NYC... not sure where in NY you are 5 Extended range and 1 standard range).

Call any dealers up in Maine, I hear many have an abundance of Mach-e’s. Bill
NH as well. I agree to use Ford.com. Look in Maine, Try 500 miles of 03901 for the Zip. A dealer in Bangor (04401) has Two select base models in stock. Quirk, Rowe, darlings, Brunswick Ford, and Arundel Ford do not charge ADM. I have no experience with Rowe.

Speaking as a dealer, you're really only going to run into the ADM issue if you are looking for a sought after model. Premium AWD ext range or any level of GT. If you're looking for the Premium AWD ext range then try and find a retired service loaner. Lastly, try looking at small dealerships in rural areas that don't really have an EV customer base. They would be the most willing to work a deal on one for you. Good luck!

Also, when using Fords main website be sure to always check the window sticker to make sure it is not a special order. The sticker would appear as green instead of blue.

Try going to shop.ford.com. It is a link from the Edmonds site. You can see dealer inventory for a given zip code with details on the vehicle and pricing..

financing comes down to the best interest rate. Purchase or ford options gives you the tax credit option, although dealer finance department plead ignorance with the options financing. The dealer will have to show you the invoice. look at every line item. taxes and destination charges are standard.

Limited production vehicles may have an ADM or dealer charge, Ie Mustang Shelby. I would walk away from that deal for this car. That is a car collectors tax.

I wouldn’t get an extended warranty and it always can be obtained if wanted at the end of the manufacture warranty. I don’t think a service plan for this vehicle is worth it. It basically needs tire rotation and windshield washer fill up.

I have a July 2021 build. I had the windshield recall that took 24 hours to do, 6 weeks to schedule.
Otherwise software updates have made PAAK work well. This is a car that is highly software dependent.

Know your dealer. Be sure they are part of the Ford EV network. if you need service, the selling dealer will be very accommodating, others may not.

See if the dealer takes x plan. Sign up for that and take off about 1k. Specify you want, in writing, what the out the door price will be. Tell him you want two key fobs.
It's just a 90 day wait period once you join the Mustang owner's club before you can actually claim the X-pricing.

If you end up having a hard time finding a dealership who will sell you at MSRP and you're willing to take a short trip (as you said you would), I recommend searching inventory in Metro Detroit for the following reasons:
  1. Easy to travel here (major airport...easy direct flight in)
  2. Dealerships here do *almost* exclusively A, Z, and X Plan purchases, so they're used to straightforward negotiations. In my experience, you just buy the vehicle at MSRP minus the A/Z/X Plan discount. My dealership (Varsity Ford in Ann Arbor) does virtually all of their business this way.
  3. If you don't have an X Plan option (not that hard to get if you have a friend or acquaintance who works for Ford), no worries. You'll probably just pay MSRP.
  4. There are two black Premium MMEs in Metro Detroit showing up right now (Serra Ford in Rochester Hills and LaFontaine Ford in Birch Run). Rochester Hills is a better bet...Birch Run is a bit out in the sticks.
All said, the current climate may have changed things a bit, but I'm pretty confident buying a Ford in Metro Detroit is probably going to be less painful than just about anywhere else.

IMO, buy locally off the lot and negotiate the ADM amount. Buyers like you is what gives the dealers the justification for the ADM. Save yourself the heartburn. It’s supply vs. demand or wait 7 months.

I gave my local dealer a call first thing. They don't have what I'm looking for at the moment. They are straight up and weren't charging any ADM's. I left them a 5-star review on Google stating that my experience working with them was excellent and I'd be happy to buy a car from them.

But also, how are buyers like me (people unwilling to play games or pay extra) the reason dealers charge ADM's? I don't get it.

Not meant to be personal. What I mean is that you want the car so bad that the price becomes less important. The more you search, the more willing you will become to “pay”.

I bought using x-plan and Ford Options financing. I ordered what I wanted and waited 6 months, infinite blue Premium AWD ER.

I think the point isn't you specifically...more that your needs are an illustration of the demand for having the car now vs ordering and waiting 8 months. That demand is what leads to ADM.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

Price and a “deal” is always relative.

I mean think about it…… 3 years ago, did you think it would be hard to find and buy a car at FULL MSRP??

I mean seriously. Paying MSRP used to be so silly that people made jokes about it!

So right now you are HAPPY to pay full MSRP. Now imagine if every single dealer in the US was charging $10k over sticker, you would probably be happy to pay “only $5k over.”

It’s all relative. MSRP used to be the ridiculous high price. Now it’s the “low price.”

In your original post you mentioned using a supercharger. I hope you meant DC Fast charger. Mach-e's will not charge on the Tesla Superchargers, only on Tesla destination L2 chargers with an adapter like the TeslaTap.

I def feel like a chump for paying MSRP lol. That King of the Hill video was hilarious.

I know the market is crazy right now but that doesn't mean someone has to join the crazy train. If I can't get the car at MSRP I simply won't buy the car.

This car is my second option after realizing the crazy train for the Bronco was already overcrowded. If this car doesn't work out, Hyundai will be getting a call about their latest EV I've heard a lot about. If not, twist my arm, I go buy another car.

Obviously that’s your decision.

But again, why are you fixated on that number? It’s just an arbitrary number.

Consider this: on a 4x, for 2021 they LOWERED the MSRP by $3,000.

Then for 2022, it was only increased by $2,000 and inflation this year was 6%!

That means “MSRP” on a 2022 is actually about $4,600 under MSRP when you consider the price changes and inflation.

Find the car you want and see what it’s worth to you. But fixating on MSRP and not budging (especially in this limited supply world) may just hurt yourself and you won’t get what you want.
