GM announced Supercuise pricing (hands free ACC and Autosteer)

Would you guys rather pay for a subscription or a flat fee?

Hope this is in the right category.

https://www.autoblog.com/2020/09/21/cadillac-super-cruise-plan-price-25-month/

GM announced their pricing for Supercruise which is after a 3 year trial.

I believe Ford hasn't announced their pricing yet. I personally like this subscription model because there is no guarantee that LIDAR mapping remains relevant in the upcoming years. We are still in the early stages of autonomous tech so it makes sense to me to pay a subscription for it.

Which would you guys prefer?

The problem with subscription fees is that they can change any time, subject to the whims of the provider, and in this case there can only be 1 for this service...

Yeah, that's a fear of mine as well. It's easy to announce a low price when no one will be paying for it for a while.

True. Flat fee has issues too. You sell the car or it gets totaled or something, that's a lost cost.

Whichever way, I want a long free-trial so I can tell if its worth it.

Super Cruise is far too limited for me to pay anything for it.

The point was to relate the GM monthly fee to the MME handsfree, not to evaluate the supercruise itself. That is, paying for it as a monthly fee vs in full once.

This reminds me of navigation updates. Years and years ago, I was talking with my boss, who just bought a brand-spanking new Ford Five Hundred. (that should date this story) It had Nav, and I had Nav in my Honda at the time.

We both agreed that if they did a one-up, flat fee at purchase, "lifetime update" fee, up to about $1K, we'd do it - it would be rolled into the monthly payment and thus "hidden." Asking for $149-$199 every year was not hidden - it was in our faces, and that made it a lot harder to do. So they ended up losing money - $1K we'd do, $149-$199 a year we wouldn't.

That's not necessarily rational, but it was what we both felt. This feels a lot like that.

And in all that time, I've bought nav updates exactly twice, both off eBay, but I also have more income now than I did then. (I couldn't afford a Mach-E-level price back then!!!)

I'm curious anyone else have the same sentiment as I do. That LIDAR mapping may stop all together in a decade or two.

If you have the same opinion, do you still think a flat fee is better?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's pretty much the same as the Mach-E's extra hands-free system...except fewer roads are mapped compared to super cruise.

Yep same thing which is why I’m comparing it.

I think if you’re keeping your car that long, the flat fee will be substantially cheaper. Subscriptions are also a way to mask how expensive things can be, especially with a car where a subscription can be active for years.

It’s only cheaper if LIDAR mapping remains relevant. In the next decade, cars might have new sensors and V2V communication to make it irrelevant.

If we’re going by Gm subscription model, it’s 13 years for $3k. I don’t know if I’d prefer a 3k flat charge or not.

True. I'd only want a subscription if I could decide month to month.

Yes, but I would guess that Ford wouldn't allow you to pick up the subscription each summer when you're traveling and then cancel the rest of the year. I'm sure they'd have some kind of restrictions like minimum length contracts or something
