Why is full charge only 230 miles of range?

One question is, did your previous car have an estimated range display? It seems this range display is new to many people, so they never used it before.
My wife's Audi Q5 has a classic GOM. When she drives to the gas station for some reason it reads a lot higher than when I do. I can't figure this out for the life of me. Should I sue Audi? My lawyer is about 20 miles away from here, but if I drive instead of my wife, we get there a lot quicker.

For full disclosure, when driving back from the crime ridden Los Angeles, it was showing 500 miles after we filled up coming down from the mountains. The only way we could get 500 miles on a tank is if Elon launched it to Mars like his old Roadster.

A tease: there is a hint why mileage is not the same for both drivers in my story. Look hard.

Good god, you have GT with the exquisite go pedal unleashing 480 hp as soon as you squeeze your right foot and you are wondering why you are not getting EPA mileage?

I mean, to be honest, I would not expect 70's to hurt as much as it does. My GOM showed me at 289 miles two mornings ago, HOT DAMN it must be getting warmer. It quickly dropped to 260 something before I even got out of the driveway lol

I got my GT and it is really nice. What a powerful machine and very comfortable.

I was counting on a usable range of 270 miles so for some of my planned trips I would not have to charge for a round trip if I didn't have too. However now after multiple charges the most I can get on the range after 100% charge is around 230 miles. This is 15% less than my expectation. I have read the threads on cold weather but it has not been that cold here.

Do other users find the same thing? The real range you can charge up to is only 85% of the estimated range from Ford?
I hope you come back and participate in this forum. You will learn a lot. I have.

I can easily get the 270 mile range in my GT when I am driving around town and on local 60 mph highways. I absolutely cannot get 270 miles of range on the interstate at 80 mph. That is how it works for most EVs, except for maybe the Tycan that has a two speed transmission.

Read some of the links others have posted and ignore the snarky comments. They are meant in good fun, at your expense, but don't worry about that. ?

I don't remember saying the EPA was fully in control. The EPA audits some, not all. What I said is Ford did the EPA rating and chose to use a slightly smaller number. Or it could have been they used a more conservative factor in the calculations. I can't remember.

Tesla rarely meets their EPA numbers MME can more often.
That’s all true but you have to understand that the reason why the numbers go so high is it the manufacturers control the conditions under which the ratings are created

Under any critical analysis of gasoline or electric usage right now they will all be considered 20% optimistic under real world conditions which is exactly what this gentleman is finding

That’s only if he’s not going uphill with a wind and really gunning it because then he can cut another 40% off

As been stated here many times, it’s the EPA drive cycle. The avg speed for the city test is near 27 mph and the highway test avg speed is near 46 mph. See below link to see the actual speeds during these tests. We are getting way more range than advertised, due to our in town driving needs. Std range RWD getting 212 mi at 80% (should be 184).

I hope you stay. As other have pointed out the cars GOM is super concervative and will improve as it learns your driving. On my car the EPA range is 270 but if the driving history gets rest it will go straight to 230 and adjust up and down from there. We also are just getting out of winter so for a lot of us it has a lot of winter history in it that having to get updated. The car is more recent bias but still it takes time.

My car a month ago the GOM said a full charge was 200 miles. Now at 90% SOC it says 220 miles and I expect in a month at 90% I expect to see 270. Warmer weather really helps.

Victor,

Here is an article that shows some real-world testing. As others have said, the temperature is a big component of battery performance. As is how you drive. I read yesterday that Tesla (who is known for over-optimistic range estimates) has now added humidity and side wind to their calculations. The European testing is even more skewed.

FWIW, temps back into the 50s/60s here. 100% charge is back up to 250 on the GOM. I haven't seen that number since last fall. Looking forward to 300 again. I know it doesn't mean a lot, but big numbers are oddly satisfying :D

Actually OP isn't. Going by guess-o-meter, not actual range.

Some interesting charts

I purchased my 2021 MME premium/ ext range / AWD and it too only showed about 235 at full charge . Now after about 1000 miles ( my daily commute is 70 miles RT) it showed 270 on a full charge.

40-45F outside temps are in the 230 mile range. 40-30f, 200, below 30 150-190. 50f mid 200’s, 60F and above you should be hitting and exceeding 270. Heat on , Lower range, heat off, AC, higher range. Highway over 70, lower range….

I wonder how many people notice that they don't get the estimated MPG in a gas car?

To get the maximum range you need to drive it accordingly; lite on the acceleration, stay at economical speeds (usually 50-60mph), avoid heavy breaking, and use equipment like AC sparingly.

EPA estimates are done with no hills no wind Betty White driving perfect temperature perfect humid from a perfect pre condition charged beyond 100 set up ….if you believe those numbers then you also believe the numbers on gas mileage which are also about 20% nonsense

You know. The checks in the mail and I promise honey I won’t ____ in your _____

Ford is as skilled at anyone at Distracting and lying along with the EPA and every government agency
