My Mach E cal route 1 just died on the road while driving on the surface road at around 20 miles/hour. It refused to do anything for 15-20 minutes.

I called Ford road side and that is absurd. No response for almost 2 hrs.

Then somehow being an IT Windows guy, I tried to do a hard reboot (Pressed power button for 1 minute) and suddenly power is back and it starts to work again.

My service guy is saying to try for 1-2 days and then come to them and they will see if they can find something.

Anyone has any idea what could be wrong and is it safe to drive for couple of days?

Pressing the power button for 1-2 minutes does a hard reboot? I never knew that. Maybe I just need to reboot to get 2.4.2 ?

Well, we're basically driving computers, with these new EVs. I'll be getting my CA Rt 1 soon, but will say that our Model Y Performance did that and after a hard reboot, problem solved!

We have heard reports of vehicles displaying warning messages to pull over and then after being shut down for 10-15 minutes it started up normally again. I don't think I have heard of a vehicle just shutting off without any warnings. That is new to me.

Never heard of hard reset - may be its a secret bypass other avenues option Ford did not tell us about but good that you thought of trying that. Two hours for Ford roadside to a good answer.

These intermittent gremlins are hard to pin point but I think an error of some type would be logged in the system. Its the first time hearing about the MME power down by itself with no warning message.

The power on off for 30 mins probably has nothing to do with the car booting up when it did - we have read reports of car starting up after some time and that's what may have happened.

Actually, ford roadside haven't contacted me still. And I am in middle of a proper urban city. Don't know what happens if you are stuck somewhere remote.

That’s what happens when they push an OTA update! « I’m patching so I’m going to have to stop the car… now! »? j/k

That is likely the problem.

BTW - if you can start the car, why not drive it home or directly to the closest Ford dealer?

Edit: another BTW - if you are waiting for a tow, make sure they tow it correctly or you will have really big problems to fix.

Or THEY (towing company and Ford) will have really big problems to fix (and they’ll be providing me a loaner while they fix it!)

I've been putting together a trouble shooting guide for 12V battery issues and car stopping/not starting problems. I've added in the "hold power button for 1 minute" idea as a possible trick to try to fix the problem. Would be nice if another forum member could replicate that solution to verify it works. Not that I'm hoping somebody's car stops working or anything..
