NORCAL FLASHING PARTY Whoo hoooo!

Nice meeting @EV Lab @tesla2mme and @MrRossKeys today! What we learned: Job 1 cars can take a looooooooooooooooooooong time if you actually update everything.

So basically you did what we are warning about in almost every page of this topic ?
You run the update without the external power supply connected ?
And then it died during flash ?
wow just wow
So basically you ignored the part of "my battery charge turns off itself…" and reply with useless and helpless argument?
wow just wow :')

I bought the same one a few days ago. Had a lower powered one and decided I did t want to take the risk. This one will definitely provide all the power needed. Got it on eBay about $30 dollars cheaper than Amazon and was shipped in 3 days.

Just be aware anyone else.. those units are power supplies made for this specific purpose, being one-step battery chargers. Another power supply not meant for the purpose of powering a car with a battery and another power supply might get into issues and cut off if it is overloaded or the voltage rises above the output voltage (over-voltage protection). A battery charger will not have those issues since it will limit current rather than cut out if voltage can't be maintained, so I would not recommend in any way to repurpose other types of power supplies, rather go with one or several normal electronic AGM chargers.

Actually you need a battery power supply not a battery charger to ensure you don’t have issues when updating with FDRS. Ideally at least a power supply that provide 40 amps minimum. 30 amps will work in most cars but not all.

It is kind of the same thing.. a constant current supply, which is different from most "power supplies", which technically are mostly voltage supplies. A voltage supply will not necessary work if it cannot supply enough current to keep the voltage stable, they can basically trip as a circuit breaker since it is considered an overload condition, or overheat and shut off because of high voltage drop. A current supply will limit the current, and keep delivering the maximum current, which is what is required to charge a battery.

The terms are not important, what is important is trhat the device can supply constant current even at lower voltage, which is what makes a "battery charger" different from a normal power supply. I just see some people repurposing other kinds of power supplies and then seeing they shut off, and not restarting since they simply cannot increase the voltage enough to get within their current limit.. Instead, rather go for a normal, but electronic, battery charger, which is actually meant for supplying power on a battery circuit.

Rumor has it that there were sprinkles, coconut, glazed, chocolate, and sugar covered donuts...

The other rumor is that someone ate the coconut donut later that night after heating it up 30 seconds in the microwave and adding ice cream on top...

Just ordered the same which should get here this week. Received the Mongoose Plus in two days off Amazon despite it saying it would take much longer. Ordered a 30 foot USB active USB extender as I won't be using a laptop. The Mongoose connects fine on the PC, so will try ForScan later today to test with the MME when the extension cable shows up. Won't even think about FDRS until all is in place. Still have to remove the panels for the power but my cover has been off at least 10 times already.

I want to thank the OP for posting this thread.

Just read all 29 pages... ?

Only 2 weeks into the wait for my order, so I'm hoping and praying that by the time I get an actual car all of this, will be solved and OTA will seamlessly bring me updates. ?

I'm not a techie, but am an early adopter and have been playing with cars all my life. This thread reminds me of the early days of cooking ROMs for my smart phones. Here I was freaking out about bricking a $300 phone, and you guys are aying with $60k cars. ?

I'll be following from a distance, but one question immediately comes to mind: where is the backup before you start this process, so you can restore if you brick the car? Is that what Forscan is for?

I use a USB 2.0 extender too and it has worked well - the only annoying thing is running in and out of the house to turn the ignition on and off again... Make sure the extender is connected directly to a powered hub or to a powered USB port on your desktop. A passive hub probably won't supply enough power to the booster.
