Ordered my mach e Sel 3/38. It's my understanding that we have to hire an electrician to install a nem 14-50, and you can use the Ford supplied charger. Has anyone opted to purchase a smart charger like Juice Box or Charge Point, and is that even necessary?

Thanks

I just purchased a juicebox 40 through my utility company and received a $450 rebate. Check to see if you have any offers in your area. I believe the ford mobile charger is 32 amps, so this charges 25% faster. Just upsize the cable and breaker to 6 gauge and a 50 amp breaker.

Many have, and leave the Ford charger in the car for road trips and as back-up. Others have gotten by without, or at least to start. Lots of previous discussions in the forum to help with your options and decision.

I personally bought a ChargePoint Home Flex and hardwired the charger to my 60 AMP circuit breaker. This allows me to get the fastest level 2 charger speed for home charging, which is 48 AMPS. You need at least a 60 AMP breaker to give you 48 AMP charging speed with the Mustang Mach E from what I read online.

I drive a lot for work and need lots of range in a short period of time, so I'm happy with my setup. All-in, installation for hardwiring in my garage within 5 feet of the circuit breaker cost me $700. You could get a really good charger set up for a fraction of the price if you don't need quick charges like I do, and keep in mind I have no level 3 fast charge stations near my house. Hope this helps.

Also, no a smart charger is not necessary. You can use the charger which came with the car and simply have an electrician install the NEMA 14-50 outlet. The mobile charger charges at 32 AMPS on a NEMA 14-50 outlet which would charge your car from 0%-100% in 15 hours. I'm curious as to how fast it charges from 0-80%. My charger setup at 48 AMPS hardwired fully charges in about 10-11 hours.

Since the car has the "smarts" to schedule charging, I elected to get a "dumb" Plug-in Grizzl-e refurb with a 24' cable at their site (no need for the thicker cable offered, it's very sturdy.) Saved over $100 and the thing is solid/built for Canadian elements. You can order the factory to set the charging speed. In my case, 40 amps connected to a 50 amp breaker. As stated, about 25% faster than the Ford charger, which stays in my MME.

I have a Wallbox Pulsar Plus. Love that it's smaller than the juicebox and chargepoint and the hook for the plug/cable is a separate piece.

Unless you are commuting long distances daily, I recommend waiting until you have the car before spending $$ on a level 2 home charging setup. Reason being, after 11,000 miles on my Select MME, I charge at work, the gym etc so just the 110volt Ford charger provided with the car is fine for home charging. And it may be specific to my Los Angeles area but at the aforementioned charger locations the price per KW is cheaper than at my home.

That seems expensive for such a short run. OP should definitely get multiple quotes for the install.

The ā€œneedā€ depends entirely on your circumstances. You donā€™t need a 220 outlet with the ford charger, an electrician is not needed for installing a 220 outlet if you know what your doing, a smart charger is not needed unless you want more control than what the car gives you. If you donā€™t drive much you donā€™t need a faster charger. only you know what you ā€œneedā€.

Home charging capacity is kind of like horsepowerā€¦Iā€™d rather have it and not need it, rather than the reverse! šŸ˜€

Forgot to mention that my electrician installed some outlets around my house which was included in that $700 price range, my bad.

I would get a 40 or 48 amp charger and keep the portable in the frunk. I have a Grizzl-E and charge at 40 amps. Do not think a "smart" chargerr is worth the money unless your a numbers person. I like to just plug it in and unplug it later. Once the in car schedule is set I don't care to fiddle.

I did do the math last month and I spent about $43 on electricity (over 1000miles) Had to noodle it from the Fordpass charge logs since my griz classic does not do such math.
