For context, I've already taken delivery of a '22 mach-e a few months ago, and it's great.. and i'm considering cancelling a pending model Y order and simply going for two mach-e's in the house (also considering a EV6 but that's a moot point here).
Obviously we can't order anything new now given the production backlog, though the dealer site inventories do show a handful around. I know that sometimes these will be spoken for already even if they're shown, how much success have people had in buying out of dealer inventories?

Many have. Some have paid ADM. All depends on how much work you put in.

This is how we purchased our Premium a few months ago. Expect to pay high ADM I could not find a single dealer within 6 states around us not doing that. We also had issues with dealers not holding the car until we arrived to even look at it in person. We paid $10K plus $3K in add ons. We off set the $10K with our trade so we moved forward. If you can find at MSRP buy it. Good luck.

I drove 6 hours to buy my premium extended range off the lot. Wife wanted a test drive before I could order or buy. No local dealers had one to test drive. It was a car the dealer had used for people to test drive. Just 3000 miles. Only issues was it was stuck with the 1.7 update a month after I got it but that is fixed now.

I’ve been in contact with about 20 different dealers on the east coast from Boston to Orlando. I’ve made it clear I’ll be there with a bag of cash for the right car with no mark up. All of them said the boss will require they charge ADM if the cars on the lot. I am on their short list of people to call if they want a quick sale with no trade in. I keep reminding myself that I want a MME, I don’t need a MME. I’m not willing to pay $10-15k more for a MME. That’s like 5-7 years of gas for me at current prices.
I’m planning on ordering the MME I want in August and buying using xplan.
I’ve found that the populating density of where I live lends the dealers to flex their muscles a little more because someone else will be walking through the door any minute.

As a cash buyer I would wait 100%.
The dealer wouldn’t let us bring financing or cash to table we had to use Ford credit only. ? Needless to say Ford was paid off within 30 days. Even with interest rates going up I wouldn’t use Ford unless they where less than what I could get, they aren’t. ?

If you're a cash buyer, it's still better to go with Ford Options to get the rebate and then pay it off immediately.

After months of searching I lucked into finding my CR1 six weeks ago. I visited the smallest Phoenix area Ford dealer in April and asked to be on the call list if a customer cancelled. Got a call about a month later about the CR1 and $2K ADM seemed very reasonable to me, so we made a quick dash to get there. Couldn’t be happier getting this car at the right time. MME’s are out there but you‘ll have to be willing to drive over as soon as you get the call. Good luck!

I’m with you, no way for $15-20k out here in SoCal!! But I kinda feel 8/15, maybe suddenly the dealers may be more willing to lessen that: cuz why would anyone pay that when they can just order one to their exact liking for msrp? I’ve said before but, I have an order, so why not sell me a car off the lot and mark up my incoming order? But I don’t run the dealer so I will wait; also made a donation to Elon, so we shall see. Depends how all the issues play out. Really just want a MME, that I can rely on.

I would love to think that ordering will go smoothly and all the cars being held up for recall are going to get out to customers. I also would like 2023 orders to be delivered on time and when people need them.
I think that is the land of unicorns for the rest of 2022 and 2023.
Zero companies are making and delivering EVs in any significant numbers outside of Tesla. Look at the order wait for a Tesla today and you can see demand for EVs isn’t going away anytime soon.
All brands are still having supply issues with ICE vehicles so it’s a sellers market for new anything. Used cars might start to come down some more normalcy but new car purchases I think have changed forever. You will have to plan ahead with your car purchase or possibly pay ADM on EVs until production volumes go up.

I bought my MME GTPE after considerable research into dealer inventory; made many phone calls, did up an excel spreadsheet, and spent many weeks travelling out of state visiting dealers to view (and sometimes test) cars. The single most important lesson I learnt from my MME purchase journey is that you need to be on site to view the car before any purchase.

There was this one dealer that offered the car in the color I fancied but had drilled in the front number plates (assumingly because someone local there rejected the car) without having that shown in the pictures online. There was another car I remembered viewing that had deep scratches from delivery on its rear bumper which was conspicously absent from the pictures I saw on the website.

I think buying from dealerships now require way more effort and patience.

Once I decided to in mid-May, I found the exact one I wanted within a week. 60 miles away. The original order buyer had cancelled. ADM was non-negotiable. IMHO, I was lucky other than for the ADM.

My motivation to act was the great increase in valuation of my 17-yr-old sports car, so I ordered an MME to replace this "trade-in". Several months of waiting without word from Ford caused me to look at options. I "waitlisted" at Ford, Kia, and Hyundai dealerships for the desired electric vehicles. I paid modest markup for an EV that meets my every need, and they honored the Carmax evaluation on my trade-in which offset the dealer markup. My new EV is a Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ltd. I've waited another 4 months for a scheduled build date on my MME order, so far. I expect Ford/dealer to honor the price protection and no-ADM promises whenever the MME is delivered. I haven't decided what follows after that. Maybe I could sell it back to the dealer with my "markup" to cover the sales tax or donate it for tax deduction.:p

Yes, ordered in Dec 2020, in Feb 2021 found the exact car in South Carolina, bought it using xplan and had it delivered. Ford delivered our ordered car in May or June (forget exactly). Looked at it and though about getting it but decided we did not want 2 Red MachEs. Probably should have bought it and got it wrapped. Now I have to wait for my April order, I did notice the exact car (Space White) in Inventory 50 miles away but will just wait this time as my Explorer slowly falls apart.

Before ordering this in April I did try to locate my build, found one at a reputable dealer coming in but no Xplan unless it was ordered that way so passed on it. It can be done.
