Ford has said a total redesign of the Infotainment UI is coming later this year. Has anyone heard whether this is in the form of a SW update or a totally new system for 2023 only?

I think the Android Automotive OS was originally supposed to launch with tte 2023 model year. Not sure if that’s still the case. IIRC the infotainment system for earlier models is a software change.

I’ve been known to be wrong though.

The October update will change the UI to match the Lightning on 2021 and 2022 Mach-Es. I believe the 2023 Mach-Es will also have the same system as the Google integration is behind schedule.

Why would that not be the case? I remember the announcement, did they walk it back later?

My recollection was that they said it was coming in 2023, but they didn't specify the 2023 model year per se.

I thought it was software updates for existing MMEs and future models would be on a different system entirely (Android Auto if I recall correctly). Don’t remember the timing of either.
The new system based on Ford's announced partnership with Google would be Android Automotive, not Android Auto. The former is an Android based operating system in-vehicle, with custom Ford developed UI features that could still support Apple CarPlay, while the latter is a screen projection technology that requires a connected Android handset, and is already supported.

I don't think there's been any public announcement regarding which vehicle lines that Android Automotive system would start with.

I believe they said that they would begin using Android Automotive in 2023. That doesn’t mean that every (or any) model in Ford’s lineup is going to get it for the 2023 model year, even if things are on track.

I haven’t heard of a walk back or delay at all but given the ongoing supply chain constraints I’d not be surprised if there was a delay. That’s presuming the switch to the Android Automotive OS requires differing hardware.

The Lightning is not very different from the current Mach-e.

“Mustang Mach-E is due for a major software update later this year that will refresh the entire interface displayed on the screens in the car,” Ford CEO Jim Farley told The Verge in a recent interview. Farley also likened it to a major Apple iPhone update, saying “the whole UX is going to change.” Farley also expressed his desire to roll out more frequent updates moving forward, something that both Apple and Tesla are known for. “We’re still not shipping enough software to the car,” he said. However, Doug Field, who has spent time at both of those companies, “has begun to improve things,” according to FoMoCo’s top executive.

I love my 2022 MME GT. Took a procession in March. There are many things about the infotainment system that could be approved upon. I am not techy nor know much about Teslas but can they do a full upgrade of the interface through a software update? New screens, change setting configurations etc.? That is amazing.

Not sure if you're asking about Tesla or Mach-E, but yes, both can make major changes to the interfaces on existing vehicles.

I believe what’s coming this fall is just a refinement to make the system more smooth and stable with minimal UI changes to bring it in line with the 2022s and the Lightning.

Maybe not the center screen, but the IPC of the Lightning is very different than the MME.
