I had my OEM 225 Primacys on my 2021 MME4x through the first 18k miles. Because tire options are so limited on the OEM premium wheels, I switched to 20" wheels, and a new tire size of 255/45/20 with Michelin Sport all season 4's by recommendation of the local Discount Tire. My summer range went from 270 to 230-240.

There are a ton of factors as this article described, but the lack of EV-minded tires within specific sizes is also a contributing factor to some choices being made.

Interesting article. It seems to imply that range decreases as the tire wears down. Am I reading it correctly? I have 45k miles on my set and range seems higher than this time last year. I think last summer I was seeing around 270-275 estimated range and now I am seeing 285-290 most mornings.

I will be installing a new set of tires first week of Sept most likely so I will see what difference a new set makes on the estimated range.

I ? your license plate!
Thank you. I like it too, but 90% of those that comment about it in the wild have no idea what it means. Then I explain it. Then I feel like an idiot for having to explain it. So, when it comes time for renewal I might change it up. We'll see.

I get it. Even a highly educated friend who has a Tesla and a Volt didn't know what an ICE car was! ?

To sum up that article, when you replace your tires, always start your search for a tire with an eco-focus rating of some sort. Many brands have product offerings with a low rolling resistance, which is the ultimate goal.

Read an article about Pirelli p-zero Elect all season tires coming soon (or maybe already on BMW iX?). Has anyone tried the winter ones? They seem spendy. I survived a Minnesota winter with the OEM A/S tires just fine—didn't drive through a blizzard to be fair, but didn't have any snow/ice issues on plowed roads either, or anything that I noticed more than my old ICE SUV.

Getting 3.1~3.4 combined freeway and city. The city is not impacted. Freeway took the hit from stock drag at high speed :(.
20” rim 9”wide. 245/45’s.
All season

Good article - thanks for sharing.

I'd really like to see a specific rolling resistance number on tires. That way, I know exactly the tradeoff of going to a wider tire or differences between models and brands.

As a rule of thumb, it looks like you lose ~7% range per wheel inch. (Engineering Explained, TFL, Tesla range docs and other tests seem to show about the same result)

Of course 2.4% of that loss is due to changing tire size.

And also rated for the weight of the EV.

Who's ultimate goal? Mine is max traction.
