If Ford pushed an update and did all those modules regularly probably that won
Thanks for the replies. To clarify:
No PAAK (never installed).
Car was locked.
Car woke up when I approached it as usual.
Did not use the fob to unlock the car.
Pressed driver's side rear door open button.
Both rear door and tailgate simultaneously opened.
Incident happened the morning after the dealer updated software for other issues I was having.

It hasn't happened again, but wouldn't be surprised if it came back up at the most inappropriate time.

Since then, I have received OTA 3.5.2. Still having issues with the infotainment, had to reboot the main screen on the way to work this morning.

I'm hopeful the foam on the garage door will help prevent more damage the next time this happens. Backing into the garage is a real chore, but may be prudent considering the HVBJB issue (another fail on Ford's part taking the easy way out on the recall).

Can you have someone here run your vin and see what modules are pending updates? I am willing to bet that door modules need update or some other modules that can contribute to this.

I'll just throw my hat into the ring and say I was a victim too and I have the damage to prove it. I came out into my garage one morning and didn't realize the tailgate opened into the garage door at some point since I last parked it (it was only 2 inches away). I opened the garage door and watched in horror as the garage door and tailgate fought like two angry drunken sailors. In the end, my garage door was nearly totaled and needs to be replaced and my mustang now has a number of scratches and gouges.

First thing I did last November before pulling into my garage was set the height of the hatch opening, so that max height is an inch lower than the height of my garage door when opened. Takes about 30 seconds to do. Works great. Never have to worry about the hatch hitting the garage door no matter how it opens.

The car is parked < 1 foot away from my garage door, so there wasn't enough time to stop it before the liftgate made contact. Luckily, the liftgate isn't dented, but there are two deep scratches in the paint.

I also scratched the liftgate but was purely human error in my case. My wife didn't realize how high the liftgate opened and we were parked such that it opened right into the metal handle on the fully opened garage door. It resulted in one small but deep (can see metal) scratch to back liftgate panel. It's disappointing because the car is still pretty new (about 2 months old).

My question related to this is how people repair the scratch (if at all)? I asked a body shop and they quoted $460. They said they can't just spot treat but would have to completely repaint that whole panel including reattaching the pony emblem. I guess the alternative is touch up paint but, probably b/c I'm still in the honeymoon period with the car, I'm interested in getting a full repair. What do people usually do for small/deep scratches like this?

Never had this issue again after turning off kick to open feature on my premium and never happened on my GT which doesn’t have this feature at all. I assume active kick to open feature somehow interfering while opening rear door.
It's hard to say if the kick to open feature is the culprit. This happened to me once, but has never happened again. I have not disabled kick to open. That being said, this flakiness may very well have been why Ford disabled the feature on 2022 models. We know it wasn't a shortage of parts since most (or all?) 2022s actually shipped with all the parts needed to enable kick to open.

I've seen countless people suggest that the solution is to just lower the opening height of the hatch. But you're not understanding the problem. If you can't park more than a foot away from the closed garage door (or wall), the opening height is irrelevant.

Yeah I am more worried it would open in my driveway on a rainy night

I think repainting the entire panel is overkill, but I'll have to find out what is possible soon.

A fellow member graciously gave me this list of needed updates for my car:

Ford Mustang Mach-E Another Damaged Liftgate! Ford should be embarrassed... 51851168565_df9657f86c_o

VERY helpful and I'll discuss with my dealership.

You’re right- I didn’t look closely enough at the picture. Tight fit for him lengthwise in that garage.

This makes me glad that my 2022 doesn't have the kick to open feature active because if this happens to me I will also have scratches. I know it isn't know if that is the cause but it still makes you say WTF.

I turned off kick to open about 9 months ago and this problem has not recurred. I think my issue may have been related to kick to open because I walked behind the car just before it opened unexpectedly.

I wondered if that could possibly happen. I thought it could on the 22's since one can still use the fob to remotely open the liftgate.
