Thanks for the replies. To clarify:
No PAAK (never installed).
Car was locked.
Car woke up when I approached it as usual.
Did not use the fob to unlock the car.
Pressed driver's side rear door open button.
Both rear door and tailgate simultaneously opened.
Incident happened the morning after the dealer updated software for other issues I was having.

It hasn't happened again, but wouldn't be surprised if it came back up at the most inappropriate time.

Since then, I have received OTA 3.5.2. Still having issues with the infotainment, had to reboot the main screen on the way to work this morning.

I'm hopeful the foam on the garage door will help prevent more damage the next time this happens. Backing into the garage is a real chore, but may be prudent considering the HVBJB issue (another fail on Ford's part taking the easy way out on the recall).

I also had random liftgate opening once. It opened while I was approaching the car one day. I use PAAK, so not key button press. I disabled the handsfree liftgate in the setting. Haven't happened again. My suggestion is disable that and see.

Happened to me yesterday, I started a thread, I was approaching the car, keys were 25 miles away, I had my phone in pocket and never touched it, when I pulled it from my pocked app was not open or anything, but yes, as I approached (not even touching the door pillar) the trunk opened, in my case my phone was at 4% battery. First and only time this has happened. I was also 30 feet from the car, so no accidental kick trigger.

No, can't physically get between the car and the garage door to activate the liftgate. I was standing by the driver's side rear door, pushed the button to open the door, then both the door and liftgate simultaneously opened.
It’s a bit sensitive, even if it’s just a shadow can set it off. I recommend turning that feature off if you park that close to the garage door.

Interesting I had the same exact thing happen to me the other day. I opened up the drivers side back door and the tailgate opened up at the exact same time. Also since then my Kick to open has only worked once or twice but worked perfectly beforehand. I don't know if they are related or not but thankfully I am not parked somewhere that my tailgate could get damaged.

@Stormtrooper

Edited, I actually have mine happening on Video from my security camera...

OP if it makes you feel better my garage door looks like that not because of ghosts or aliens but because of potential not pulling into the garage far enough. I like to think I can avoid the garage door marks on my trunk with lots of foam. Going to test and make sure its liftgate proof.

I have a theory. That's probably an undocumented feature, artificial intelligence of a sort. If you opened the trunk previously after opening the rear door, the car learned the behavior and just trying to be helpful. ?

The car is definitely possessed! I'm looking for a Mach-E exorcist as we speak. The Priests I've contacted so far only want to exorcise me :)

I do love how the lights are always turning on (approach lighting, phone in pocket), and then you hear weird liquid noises from underneath. My wife or neighbors will say "what is that noise" I am always like, the car is semi-alive, its just taking care of its own business I assume...

I ordered a MY23 CA Route 1 because I wanted AWD and extended range, at a slightly lower price than a premium AWD ER. The one feature I thought I was going to miss is the power liftgate. Now, I am glad not to have that. Too many of these stories.

Do we think that this is only happening in models with the kick to open feature?
Never had this issue again after turning off kick to open feature on my premium and never happened on my GT which doesn’t have this feature at all. I assume active kick to open feature somehow interfering while opening rear door.

This has happened to me 3 times so far since Jan 03... Once in the garage a few weeks after purchase (within 2 seconds of unplugging the car). The second time happened while I was mowing lawn 3 months later (car outside and no FOB or phone nearby). The Ford Rep here opened a ticket for me and I took it to the dealership. They 'saw some codes' and reprogrammed a module. The third time occurred whilst approaching the car when I got in range (about 20ft). When I got in, I had a notification that a power-up update had completed successfully. I did not bother posting the 3rd incident until now.

It's be super interesting if it's just the '21s with the hands free opening.

I've got a 22 coming and I'm wondering if I need to buy the "Ford Garage Pillow" accessory.

mine is a 21, and add me to the club of people who turned off the kick to open, just did it an hour ago. Honestly the few times I tried the kick to open it wouldnt work. The first few times it would, but I havent been able to get it to work anyways in months.
