My Mach E finally arrived! I bought an EV6 back in March - here are my notes / comparison:

Price: (within 1-2k of each other / about the same)

Looks - Exterior:
The Mach E looks better, has some curves to it. The EV6 has kind of a straight line box in the middle of it that is underwhelming. Both cars look pretty good, this is fairly close.

Looks - Interior:
The EV6 has more hard plastic, and more piano black finish. The nod goes to the mustang again here.

Driving
The EV6 definitely feels faster, and more assured around a corner. The EV6 is like a modern roller coaster where quick acceleration, and g-forces into corners are highlights. The EV6 is constantly clawing at the road and can handle whatever you want to try. The Mach E is more like an older wooden roller coaster. It wants you to have fun, but you are going to feel some parts of the drive where you wonder if this thing is going to hold together or not. Do not pull up to a stop light next to an AWD EV6 - it is quicker than you think. I was worried about the Mach E being too bouncy / rough of a ride, but I don’t think it is that bad. Definitely the Kia is a smoother ride though.

Self Driving
I have been really impressed with Kia’s lane centering and auto cruise control options. It is 90% of what blue cruise does, except it works everywhere. Blue cruise is better if you are on the right road, but overall I would take the Kia hands down. (No pun intended) Fords lane centering / lane keep did not really work for me other than ping pong mode.

Room / Space / Visibility
The Mach E definitely sits more upright like a crossover, where the EV6 is more like a coupe / hatchback. The Mach E has better visibility but there are some extra tricks the Kia has. When you change lanes in the Kia, it has a camera that pops up on the dash showing your blind spot. I have come to rely on this, and the mirrors on the Mach E are tiny and I find it annoying to be back to turning my head as much for lane changes. The center console in the Kia is too big - I feel cramped in there. The glass roof in the Mach E definitely helps it feel more spacious compared to the sunroof in the kia.

Tech Stuff / Other Notes
  • The Kia Meridian audio system is a big disappointment. I think for about 500$ you can easily replace the sub in the back and fix most of the problem.
  • The huge screen in the Mach E is not really any better than what Kia has. The Kia screen is still pretty big, but it is the right orientation and in the right location for safer driving.
  • Wireless CarPlay is definitely nice to have. I tried a 3rd party adapter in the Kia and it was not very reliable.
  • Heads up display on the Kia is great, everyone should be doing this.
  • The kia has a physical button to get the cameras engaged, which is really important when parking. The ford you have a fumble to find nested in the touch screen. The parking camera on the kia also provides a better view.
Too soon to tell -

The first 100 miles in the Mach E has underwhelming efficiency. This happened in the Kia too, then it got better. Right now I think the EV6 would project more range on a full charge. I think the EPA marks the EV6 as more efficient as well, but I expect the bigger battery in the Mach E will make this a wash, and it will only really matter in road trips, where I would expect the 800V setup in the Kia to be better. (Not a big deal to me - I have only DCFC twice in 6 months, and that was to see how it works).

I first test drove a Mach E in the summer of 2021 and I then knew I wanted an EV. I think I might stick with it. My wife calls me a brand whore and there is some truth to that. I want American manufacturers to come up with a competitive EV, and the mustang name means something in the market (even if this is not a “true” mustang).

I am leaning towards selling the EV6 - I will end up coming out ahead by 1k$ after you figure out the total original price and the tax rebates. The market is getting softer from what I see.

How difficult was it to get the EV6? Did you have to order and wait? Or did you buy it off the lot? Did you pay MSRP? I love my Mach-E but I did the options financing and definitely will be replacing it in a year or two. I'm looking ahead to my options. The EV6 is one I'm interested in. I haven't ruled out going with a newer Mach-E but I want to see what else is out there.

Man, I hear you about fumbling around the touchscreen to get the damn camera screen to show. It’s really a terrible design and a daily frustration.

I contacted local Kia dealers in February and was able to lock it in for Msrp. The ev6 supply chain might be tighter than the Mach e , if that is even possible.

I was initially interested in the EV6 and this summer even considered trading into a GT-Line. However, dealer markups ($7000!) are a deal breaker for me. Toss in the fact that Kia has lost the $7500 tax credit and it turned into nearly a $15,000 swing in the wrong direction.

Looking at the pricing for 2023 MMEs, an EV6 is still probably worth considering.

That's too bad. But what I needed to know. I definitely need the tax rebate.

Nice comparison.

While BlueCruise is fantastic I could believe Kia's ADAS system is better given my experience with a Telluride. I heard Ioniq 5 owners complain about the lane keep assist ping ponging though. Both systems are better than Tesla's autopilot IMO. Tesla's system disengages too often at the slightest issue. Both Kia and Ford allow manual movements (like lane changes) without full disengagement.

Mach-E's efficiency isn't stellar but the large battery pack helps with range. I can see the MME edging the EV6 slightly in real world range because of it.

The Premium AWD ER's skinny tires are the biggest flaw of that trim. Traction/grip isn't great. The GT PE's tires, suspension, and seats are all stellar. The GTPE felt planted all the time even at 90mph weaving through traffic... not that I ever did that :)

The EV6 I ordered back in early summer is arriving mid Nov (at MSRP) so wait times aren't too bad. It's configured exactly how I wanted it - blue exterior, white interior. There are good Kia dealers out there with no BS.

However, I just found an i4 M50 allocation.

I've driven in a Hyundai with the lane-keeping system and my experience is that it ping-pongs quite a bit whereas Bluecruise will only ping pong on very wide lanes. This was almost a year ago if it's of consequence.

EV6 has a 2-3 year wait list here in Western Canada.

I'd take the i4 in a heartbeat if I had the chance to get one (for MSRP) before the end of the year.

What size tires are on the EV6? After driving the MME for awhile (If the railcar ever gets here!) the first change I plan is wider tires.

Do you worry that a camera blind sport mirror might fail in a pinch, and your reaction back to the traditional mirror might have slowed?

The camera worked 100% of the time. Pretty much everything on the Kia worked consistently. I think most of their quality gremlins are in the rear view mirror (pun not intended but I will take it).

The view over the shoulder in the kia is pretty poor imo. If / when the camera was to fail, I would fix that right away as a safety issue.

You don't have blind spots if your rearview mirrors are properly adjusted.

Learned that from the Tapit Bros. But if you got totally used to using the dashboard and stopped using the traditional mirrors, the additional fraction of a second (if the camera failed) could be a difference maker.
