Need new brakes 55k miles - maybe?

55k miles, 2021 Rte 1, RWD. Chicago weather.

Heard some coarse sounds when starting and baking so made an appointment with the local dealer. This is what the brakes look like. They said both rotors and pads need replacement. My driving is 99% one pedal and very occasional braking. I don’t understand why the brakes would wear out so easily.

The estimate is attached.

Anybody have any ideas?

That looks like pretty mild surface rust. Especially for Chicago. What is the pad thickness?

Use 'em or lose 'em.

Regen braking can actually be harder on the rotors and pads. Excess corrosion on the rotors can leads to grooves, noisy-grabby brakes, and pad damage. Moisture that gets between the pad material and metal backing plate does not get baked away like it should from friction braking and can result in pad failure.

I learned this the hard way living in the rust belt, unfortunately, that is why I make it a point to use some friction braking every time I drive. Got to keep those rotors shiny.

I too would wonder how much brake pad was left. The pics are just showing surface corrosion that can be dealt with by using the friction brakes.

I’d try “bedding” the brakes and see if that doesn’t clean them up. Turn off 1PD (or shift to N) and use the brakes really hard a few times.

I subscribe to C&D and while reading the Letters to the Editor section in this months issue I found this little blurb about a reader and his Mach-E. It's a similar situation to yours but much lower milage.

Anyway, I thought it was kind of interesting and makes me wonder if I should not use 1 pedal drive every once in awhile. Especially because I live in Illinois and we salt the roads like crazy.

I make it a point to use the friction brakes really hard after every car wash. Before I did that, my brakes would be stuck the next morning if they were wet when I parked. It sounded really bad when they broke loose. I’m just over 20K miles and they look fine.

We had a dusting of snow a little over a week ago and I can still see salt on the roads. Even after an inch of rain yesterday.

Brake cleaners generally remove pad dust, grease and grime - the stuff generated by brake use. I don’t think it will do much on the rust and corrosion.

Pretty hard to believe that the rotors are too thin to resurface but without measurements that's just my opinion.

I would try this before changing the "whole thing"

there were a batch of bad pads that stuck to rotors, fell apart, and scored rotors.... you might wanna see if your VIN falls in the TSB covering the bad pads. regardless, the rotors should have enough thickness to turn down rather than replace.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that TSB only applied to GTs.

I had a similar scenario and I simply put the car in neutral when I was coming to a stoplight and used the brakes instead of regen braking. Did that for a 30mile drive and presto, brakes are fine again. See the Mach-E manual on page 318.
