Well it seems that chips have an expiry date has some Tesla owners are now experiencing. Hopefully even if after some years you will not be able to receive anymore OTA updates (imagine in your head)that the computer chips that the car relies on will not fail like those on the MME. That was a surprise to me discovering that those chips could come to an end of life type of thing?
The issue some Tesla owners are seeing is is a flash wear issue. Apparently they didn't know what literally every embedded systems programmer outside of Tesla knows, which is that you need to either use flash with a levelling controller, or manually manage levelling - either way, you avoid "burning out" the flash during its lifetime. This is because flash memory cells have a limited number of read-write cycles, and that needs to be managed. If you have an SSD in your laptop, the same exact issue applies, but the controller manages that for you generally so that you never notice it, including remapping to a buffer. The major manufacturers (e. g. Micron/Crucial) expose this from the drive if you ask the drive for it.

It's actually in some high level ways a lot like wear in EV batteries, although you can't take that analogy too far.

There's a lot of writeups about this particular issue around, for example: Flash Memory on Some Tesla Cars Is Reportedly Burning Out, Causing Major Issues (gizmodo.com)

Hi guys!

Can't wait to tell you all about driving the Mustang Mach-E. Here's what I can say... I got to skip the little 4 hour silly press event and just take a car for the full day to do whatever I wanted to with it. Most of you probably have no idea who I am, but I love to get into the nitty gritty of EV (and admittedly, ICE) powertrains... So expect a lot of the nerdy stuff from me! I was able to perform a DC charging test, gauge performance driving characteristics, city driving characteristics, ADAS functionality, and much much more. As you've heard, the embargo lifts on December 15 so that's when you'll get a wave of content across my channels, and I'm sure everyone else's, about Mustang Mach-E. I specifically asked for a Grabber Blue example (extended range / dual motor) which stood out strong against the grey snowy/rainy skies of Detroit. We shot a full gallery of stills, which I can share soon - and before the embargo lifts!

A friend of mine has a Tesla X. They changed his chip free of charge.

Did you spend time trying out the driver aid features? I would be interested to watch a video about how those work and if they are useful or a nuisance at times.

But maybe you could only take the smoke generator, would be less expensive. ?
Smoke generators rely upon the hot exhaust from the engine to burn the smoke oil (Corvus oil or other similar oils) and create the billows of smoke for coal rolling a big Dodge ram ... err, I mean for skywriting and aerobatics. The lack of hot exhaust on the MME is going to present a problem. ;)

Just tell us now if you would consider replacing your model 3 with one...I don't think that would violate the embargo.

Welcome to the forum! I've been a subscriber to your YouTube channels and following on Twitter. I can't wait to hear the nerdy insights.

Since you are a fane of ICE and EV, I'm anxious to hear how the Mach-E felt to you in that regard. The engineers have talked about how they wanted to give it a Mustang feel in the handling and performance and I'm curious how true that is.
