Thanks for all the responses. This apparently isn't an unreasonable quote, but a second one may be worth it.

I should have been more specific on the amps. The 'Scope of Work' line in the proposal specifically says that they will "install 50A Charger (40A continuous draw)," which seems right.

Potentially dumb follow-up question: if I'm installing this right next to my breaker panel in my garage, does the electrician just have to run the wiring a couple feet (see image with red circle for the approx. installation location)?

The company I solicited the quote from wanted pictures of the garage and the location of the breaker panel, but also wanted to see the location of the main electrical panel located outside on the side of the house. In my case, the main electrical panel happens to be on the opposite side of the house from the garage. I don't really have a good understanding of whether part of this process requires some sort of change to that panel.

Easiest install would be to mount it directly below the panel because you won't need to drill thru wood studs in the wall.

I just purchased a 2023 Mach-E and now need to get a level 2 charger in my garage. I just received a quote from a large, multi-city EV installation company. Minus the charger itself (which I plan to purchase separately), the quote was still about $1,700 (including tax). This includes $150 for pulling a permit for my city (Austin, Texas). The main charge for installing the 50 amp charger is $1,273.

My question is whether this amount is reasonable. I was vaguely expecting something closer to $1,000 just based on reading this forum and a few other sources. The quote seems thorough in terms of the itemized things they'll do, but I'm trying to decide if I should go get a second quote from another company here in town.

Thanks in advance for any insights.
My breaker box is in the garage and my electrician installed a 50A breaker and an outlet for about $350. I'm running an Emporia L2 charger at 40A.

I went with a company that does all the local installs for Tesla. Commercial and residential . I didn't want to have to worry about anything involved with it . It ended up costing me $1200 but they did need to be creative with getting the line from down and across to up and into the garage .
One little thing ....they TRIED charging me the entire price quoted even though we agreed to a " time and materials " contract which did NOT add up to that amount ....but that's another story

I just had the 240 plug installed and used the Ford charger. It was just over $200, and completed by a certified electrician several of us in our neighborhood have used for either adding the plug or installing a charger. For 22,000 miles I used my Ford charger. It just died and I just paid $359 for a Nurzviy that is working great so far. My dealer said I would have to make an appointment (like at least 6 weeks out) to get the charger looked at before they would replace it so I will still do that but in the meantime, I went ahead and bought the Nurzviy.

My cost was around $650 but I did all the work myself. All it took was 50ft of 6/2($150), a 60 amp breaker($20), an Emporia evse($400), and some miscellaneous hardware($80). A couple of hours later I had the unit powered on and ready to charge.

I know this isn't the approach everyone should take and each installation is unique so costs will differ but it should hopefully provide a baseline for the retail costs associated with an evse installation.

Over nine months of charging and no issues yet plus every time I look at it I get the smug satisfaction that I did it myself!:D

Please take this as helpful advice. 6/2 romex is rated at 55amps and should not be paired wit a 60amp breaker. Romex should only be in concealed areas.

A: 6/2 Romex NM-B is a 600v cable rated for 55 amps and can be installed in concealed work (behind walls) in normally dry locations, per the NEC.

I paid about $1100 in Colorado (including an Autel 50A charger) for install right next to my box, very much like what your situation looks like. Colorado has a 30% tax credit on charger purchase and installation, as well.

For an installation 220 receptical for a ChargePoint just to the right of my 200amp breaker panel in Branham, TX, cost me $575. I purchased the ChargePoint for about $850 directly from CP.

Why was the ChargePoint so expensive? They retail for around $600.
while $850 seems high, last fall and early spring this year they were in the $750+ range. they've come down a lot since.

If they’re running the circuit from that panel in the garage, it’s very short run and the price seems a tad high. Even if you have to cut and repair the sheetrock, it’s not that big of a deal.

I purchased a ChargePoint Home Flex and had it installed(hardwired with a 60 amp breaker) by a licensed electrician. My wire run was between 20-30 ft and it cost $719.25.

I believe that the 30% tax credit is the same federal one that we all are eligible for. I don't see anything specific to Colorado.

Oh, you're right, Rick. I learned about it on the Colorado.gov website, but I just looked it back up, and you're right, it's referring to the IRS for that credit.

Yup.

In July 2021 I paid $639, which was $50 off at the current time. I bought the same charger for $574, after discount. 10% in 2 years despite inflation. This is for a JuiceBox 48. Currently $639 on Amazon.

Is this the "main" panel for the house or is it a "sub" panel in the garage? If it is a Sub Panel there may not be enough capacity for the 50 amp circuit.

Please post close up pictures of all of your electrical panels with the doors open.
