Rock created a star shaped crack, scheduled repair, but Safelite couldn't get to it before crack expanded beyond repair boundary.

Now need new glass, scheduled it, but of course it's a generic replacement. If I want Ford glass got work work with Allstate and pay all or some - unsure what at this point.

So - has anyone just taken the Safelite glass? If so, comments? Thanks!!!

Safelite doesn't make glass, they install it. There's OEM glass, which is made by the same company that makes it for Ford, and has the logo, etc. Then there is glass that doesn't meet those requirements.

If you have the IRR SoundScreen glass, I'd recommend insisting on it.

This kind of pushback from an insurance company is a reason not to go with certain companies like GEICO, Allstate, State Farm.

I just had my replaced with safelite and it came with what Rick described above. Says soundscreen as well. I didn't even ask specifically for it.

They did have to take the car on a 10 min drive to recalibrate the cameras which was new, but it came back in one piece.

In all fairness, they haven't said no - I emailed my agent to see what the deal is (pay more, etc). I'll update when I hear back.

Right, you need to insist on the exact same specs.

Got it worked out. I pay a difference of around $600 to get Ford glass. But the local installer cannot do the recalibrate so they said to take it to Ford, but that Allstate will reimburse the cost as its part of my insurance.

I also found out that there is some sort of OEM ryder you can get - where OEM parts are covered by the policy. Requested the price for that today.

$600! Yeouch!, is that just your comprehensive deductible? We have a rider on ours (via USAA) in Texas, where we have a $50 deductible for glass, so all we would pay for a new windshield is $50.

I could get whatever glass Safelite wanted to use for $0. To get Ford glass paying $600. I'm getting an OEM addition to the policy as soon as it's quoted. I paid $50,000+ for this car, its in near perfect condition - so not complaining.

The glass place I used couldn't do the recalibration because their equipment was broken that day. They suggested I take it to the dealer to have them do it. I never bothered. I tested all the camera/sensor functions and it all still worked fine. I've heard that it's self-calibrating but not sure. Might just be a matter of how careful the glass installer is about not disturbing the camera/mirror cluster.

Followup on Allstate: I asked my broker to track down the "OEM parts" option. All he found was an option I could have gotten immediately after buying the car - at least in NC he could not find any other option.

On my Lincoln, I took it to a actual shop that does glass installation. I am not a fan of Safelite. The shop I went to does custom glass for custom cars and he has been doing glass for 30 years. I have just a little more confidence in him then a "technician" to comes to my house. I also want factory glass. Some of the non OEM, not all, is not a exact replacement to OEM glass.

I also worked with the guy to pay him directly and not go through the insurance company. He gave me a "discount" for not going the insurance route. My insurance would have required me to pay the difference between the OEM glass and non-OEM. I was glad to pay that difference. For me it was just easier to go direct and not through insurance.

I have not done my MME, but I am getting some chips that I am not happy with. I heard that the alignment is not needed and the unit self aligns. Do some research on that on the forum. I believe there are few people who have had their windscreens replaced and posted on the experience.

Safelite just replaced the glass and did a calibration (even though they sent me an email saying they could NOT do the calibration!).

As I mentioned earlier, I had agreed to pay $600 or so for the Ford glass. But in the end, Safelite couldn't even find a 3rd party with the glass, so they worked with Allstate and it was a no-cost to me.

Installer was very professional and experienced, and I'm a happy camper!

On the MME the calibration is done by the car, not a programmer the glass shop has. I had my glass replaced at Safelite too but in Minnesota there is no deductible and if I want OEM parts the companies are obliged to do so.

Glad it worked out for you too

The Safelite guy had to drive around for 10 min with some equipment connected to the car.
