No, you don't need to add hardware to use Tailwind. It connects to your car's Bluetooth. Tailwind includes a hardware dongle for customers who don't have Bluetooth on their car. Your MME has Bluetooth :)

According to their website you need a sensor. And the rationale is … stupid (to be polite).
This video explains whether or not you need a Tailwind Vehicle Sensor, followed by a short demonstration. In short, if you want the auto-open / close features and you have an iPhone, you need a vehicle sensor. If you have an Android phone and it is paired with your vehicle, you don't need a vehicle sensor.

Why would anyone do this instead of just buying a $20 garage door opener or using the integrated buttons in the visor?

Seems like an expensive solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
What, push a button to open my garage door, like some kind of caveman??? :)

Seriously, in addition to automatically opening the door when I drive up to my garage, I like my Tailwind because it:
1) automatically closes the door if I forget and drive away X meters
2) automatically closes the door if I'm home and leave it open for X minutes
3) automatically closes the door if I leave it open after X O'Clock

It's a small luxury but I have forgotten to close my garage door in the past, and had kids steal from my garage, so I think of it as a security device as much as a convenience device.

Ah, clearly I have an Android so this never came up. The sensor is small and could fit in the glove box easily if you wanted.

I would have thought my repeated discussion of HomeKit functionality would have given it away ???

I don’t really understand what they’re doing here. Does it mean that they disable the app in CarPlay unless you pay the ransom? I didn’t know that was possible.

Or is the subscription only for the geofence part?
Chamberlain has been horrible about subscription gouging. Even if I wanted to use myQ with a voice assistant, I have to pay like $10 bucks a year. Expensive? No. Worth it? Arguably not.

I went with MyQ for Amazon Key service. Unfortunately the app is great at opening the door, but doesn’t close it well at all.

You don't need to pay to use MyQ on your phone. The app is free for your phone. I've used it for about 7 years. Comes in handy if you need to open the garage door remotely for a friend or need to know whether the door is open. If a burglar gets in the garage and opens the door, you are notified. If they want me to start paying, I would cancel though.

100% how I use it, I gave them as gifts to family at Xmas, and now we can all access if needed. For day to day I always use my visor buttons. Proximity sounds cool, but 75% of the time we park we are outside, so I dont want the door opening and closing on auto.

I automate everything. Even my toilets are automated and have voice assistants.

But beside all the other valid reasons provided, I replaced my grandmother's garage door with a MyQ enabled opener because she's elderly and lives alone. While she lives in a gated community, they have an HOA that will fine you for leaving your garage door open. So, automating it ensures that she doesn't get fines, allows me to get in if there's an emergency and ensures that she's safe from possible intruders through the garage. At 93, she can sometimes forget these things.

Wow. I haven't gone that far. Mine just raise the lid when you approach and close after you leave. I might have to look into this.... ?

Just a tad more than I want to spend. Mine were 1/4 the price of those.
Ok, then just drive down the hill and come visit me, you can experience them free of charge!
