Seems to be down to higher costs associated with damage/collision, which certainly seems to be an issue for some EVs, but especially Tesla where the replacement costs and delays to get parts have to be a headache for them even more than it has been for average customers.

Still a bummer overall, and there is definitely a less spoken of issue when it comes to collision and costs when it comes to BEVs, especially if there is any battery container intrusion/damage.

I think Teslas in particular are expensive to repair. Aside from any EV related components, they have been very focused on simplifying manufacturing by creating single large pieces of body panels that can replace multiple equivalent parts on a normal car.

Great for lowering manufacturing cost and upfront cost, terrible for repairability.

Fault lies with Hertz not providing adequate information to renters also.

Yeah, I was trying not to just beat up on Tesla as I am sure other EVs have their cost issues on repairs, but their push for single fabrication for structure pieces has to play heavily into how often they are just totaled out.

Yeah I think that's part of it too. There ought to be a "how-to" sheet slipped in that paper folder they hang from the rearview mirror. Or at least a QR code that directs people to a webpage.

But in a broader sense, it's just too soon to be stocking a lot of EVs for rentals. When people rent a car that's not theirs, they need familiarity and confidence they can just sit in the vehicle and drive it like they're used to. It's already a bit daunting for some people even with ICE, with controls and settings in different places. But at least the basics are the same. Certain key factors are drastically different between ICE and EV. DCFC, L2, 1PD, etc etc.

I think new cars are expensive to repair regardless of whether they're EVs or not. It's all the integrated radars, cameras and sensors. Look at all the threads here about how much a simple small damage to the MME cost to repair. The lights alone are $5000. I had my 2 side mirrors replaced under warranty, and the dealer charged Ford 3k.

It's not isolated to Tesla.

Hertz is selling used RWD, short range M3 for 20k with 50-80k miles. That's not much of a deal if you factor in the rebates, but federal (if leasing) and state.

Maybe this seemed like a good idea in a few select markets with DCFC on every corner, but... damn, in hindsight Hertz's decision to massively ramp up EV rental to the masses looks realllllly obviously stupid. People were renting these things in the midwest and trying to roadtrip with them with zero experience. That was dumb, Hertz. Really, really dumb.

Used EVs are eligible for $4K incentive if under $25K.

Most of these Model 3s are two years old so they are eligible. I'm sure many are beat up.

All things considered above, anyone think the recalls regarding the autopilot may also be a reason why they are trying to offload inventory?

I looked at model Ys on the Hertz site... new ones are ~$50K, less $7.5K with zero miles. (net ~ $44K)

Used ones with 50-80K miles are $35K

Doesn't look like much of a fire sale to me.

You must buy from a used car dealer. Don't know if Hertz meets the qualifications.

I don't think roadtripping with Teslas is the issue (very easy).

It's how delicate Teslas are in general. Small dings can be expensive to repair. Modern cars are all this way with sensors and wiring everywhere. Hertz wants vehicles you can beat on like Corollas and Sentras.

They will have a dealer's license I'm sure. If they didn't they would rely on the purchaser to perform own registration, etc.

There are third party sites like Keysavvy.com that can even broker used EV sales between private parties and capture the used EV tax credit.
