I’m having a CarPlay issue and can’t find an answer to it anywhere. I’m wondering if anyone else has encountered it and knows how to fix it.

Ever since the last update my car will connect to CarPlay fine, but I cannot use any data on my phone while wireless app projection is on and some of the CarPlay apps can’t use it either. For example, if wireless app projection is on I cannot use Apple Maps on either my phone or through CarPlay and I also can’t use internet/my browser on my phone. My podcasts won’t load on the phone or through CarPlay, etc etc.

If I turn off wireless app projection and just plug my phone in via USB, everything works fine. It’s truly just when trying to connect wirelessly.

I checked that it’s connected to the projection WiFi that starts with PRO then a bunch of numbers and letters. It is, but it also seems to be trying to jump between that and the car’s other WiFi connection (which I just have labeled “Ash’s Mache”). However, I can’t seem to fix that either. Forgetting those WiFi networks on my phone did not fix it.

Anyone else have this happen? Any ideas on fixes?

Your iPhone cannot use WiFi and do wireless CarPlay at the same time (because the iPhone only has one WiFi radio). When wireless CarPlay is active, data must come over cellular LTE only. So if you are trying to use it in an area with bad service, it won't work very well.

You should enable and download offline maps for your area so Maps continues to work with a poor data connection.

If you are using CarPlay while at home, then plug in the phone instead.

That makes sense to me but I’m not actually trying to use WiFi. It just won’t stop trying to connect to it.

It sounds like your phone is connected to the App Projection wifi directly, versus using it on background for wireless projection (i.e.: CarPlay) and using your cellular network for actual data. That is seems intermittent is strange, but it may be the phone and car fighting over which actual wifi to use. I might try the following:

- on your phone, forget the wifi network and remove the Mach-E from CarPlay
- on the car, forget your Phone from bluetooth and toggle App Projection

Essentially, force the phone to reestablish a CarPlay profile from scratch and see how that plays out.

(Will take the opportunity to add some commentary around my annoyance with CarPlay's behavior w/r/t wifi and cellular service, as I have crappy service where I live, so when connect to CarPlay wirelessly, everything is slow to load, if it loads at all. This all while I'm in my driveway which has, by design, excellent wifi coverage. Alas, as @MachLee mentioned, there's only one wifi radio.)

The phone needs to be connected to the WiFi network for CarPlay/Android Auto for Wireless CarPlay to work. Once connected to wireless CarPlay, it should be using your cellular network for any data unless your settings dictate otherwise.

Is your Cellular Data option turned on?
Do you have those apps turned off for cellular access?

My parents use Xfinity for cell service. They pay by the Gigabyte, so my dad disables cellular access for many non-essential apps to prevent them from updating in the background when he is not connected to WiFi.

To check, go to settings app, cellular.
First check to make sure cellular data is switched on, then scroll down to the list of apps. Make sure Maps or whatever mapping app you use is turned on.

I pay for the AT&T WiFi hotspot in the car so I cannot use wireless CarPlay and connect to the AT&T hotspot at the same time. I always use wired CarPlay.

You already know the fix. Use the wired connection.
It works and as a side benefit it will charge the phone.

I'm jumping in this boat as well. CP's been all sorts of messed up since the Tesla update, however I don't think it was the MME update but IOS update at about the same time. At first I thought it was my garage access point but now that it's happened all over town it's painful. The data on the phone just disappears for many minutes at a time. I'm thinking it's latching to the car and doesn't actually let go of that wifi CP connection even though it's showing connected to LTE/5g. I think it's the phone but several reboots later it's still not acting proper. Maps are a new sort of messed up now. They used to just be horribly off, now they're taking turns and driving several car lengths down a street I didn't turn on. I can watch the maps gps continue a turn based on my phones direction and speed. I can mess with it if I hold it in my hand an twist it fast, it'll pick the next right and show me I'm on that street driving away, even if stationary.

I have a launch weekend 15 pro max. I've confirmed odd crappy behavior with many other launch weekend 15 pro owners. Sadly Apple won't own up to it, they blame the car, the car blames apple, I secretly look for a 13 pro to go back to. I havn't done the fully wipe restore from scratch because sometimes it works pretty well and I forget it's a box of madness just waiting to mess up a turn.

I am going to go out and nuke the existing CP connection in my phone/car now. It won’t fix the maps thing but might fix this annoyance.

This exact thing has happened to me recently and is driving me insane. I’ve reset and reconnected everything. I’ll add that I can’t receive text messages or notifications while in the car connected to CarPlay, so as soon as I leave my car I’m flooded with everything I missed.

It’s super annoying to have to USB plug in (new car, new phone) ESPECIALLY since this is a regression in functionality. It worked fine for months, so hoping there’s a better solution…
