Good reminder for everyone to buy this one for $100 that includes a button for the frunk.

Program it yourself for free if you still have both admin keys. Then stash your original admin keys somewhere safe so you can always program another if you lose the new one.

Switch to this one and enjoy the frunk button.

When you order the fob, make sure you know the part number inside yours, above the battery. The first one I ordered wouldn't program in my 2021. I had to order a different one with the right number. And those numbers are tiny, about the size of medicine-bottle insert information.

Why do you need the part #? Are they different on older model year cars? My 2023 programmed it no problem without checking any numbers.

Let this be your cautionary tale so that you can learn from my utter stupidity. So you know how key fobs look so much alike. Well in preparation for a trip I stripped my keys down to just the car fob so that I wouldn't be lugging around a heavy set of keys. Fast forward to the last moment of my trip to Texas when we were rushing to turn in our Ford Edge rental car at DFW and I put the key fob in the cup holder. Except that I made the dumbest move ever and put the WRONG KEY FOB in the rental car when I turned it in. I left the key fob for my Mach-E and flew back home with the Ford Edge key fob in my purse.

When I got back to my home airport I realized my mistake when the key fob in my purse didn't start my Mach-E. Well I overnighted the key fob back to Dallas to the rental car company so that worked out. But the douchebag with Hertz Rental Cars must have thrown my Mach-E fob away or not turned it in to lost and found. Thanks a lot!

So I had to buy a replacement fob from the Stealership and they charged me $606.73. You heard me right. $606.73 including sales tax. Thanks Ford for raping us at every opportunity! I know that I made a hugely dumb mistake but it really hurts to get hammered SO HARD for it.
Ouch! Sorry you went through that so from this point forward guard the fob with your life! Well, maybe not quite that! ?

That was my experience. I followed the process multiple times, and I got "Failure to Program" as a message. I was fortunate that the eBay seller was understanding and accepted the return. When I searched using my part number, I found a different seller, and it cost a little more. But following the process, I had it programmed on the first try.

I'm not sure I even know where my key fob is. Haven't used it much in 3+ years.

Aside: An annual keyfob replacement is covered under the extended warranty.
I believe the extended warranty keyfob replacement is a surcharge to have on the warranty.

Much cheaper to buy a 3rd fob, program it yourself, and stick it in a drawer. I paid $56 plus tax.

I bought the F-150 fob and programmed it myself after reading horror stories like tarheelluv’s!

Been there and the I bought AirTags and attached it as a key ring
It’s not just Ford Dealers, I only have 1 fob for my Panamera, I’m to cheap to pay the $700 price for the second one and you can’t reprogram another fob as far as I know. Porsche has made so you can’t go around them. Ace Hardware says they can sell you a fob for MachE. Have not tried them but maybe should While I still have two keys.

Hi hope that others chime in on this..... Has anyone with only one keyfob ever had a second fob programmed anywhere other than a Ford dealer?

A technique I have found useful to help avoid the OP's rental car / personal car fob mistake is to put covers on my FOBs.

I have a blue cover on my 3d Mach E fob to distinguish it at a glance from my two OEM fobs which do not open the frunk... those two have a silicone cover and a fake "carbon" cover. I found these three different fob covers also help me mentally track which fob has the oldest / least used internal battery, and which fob is for Sonny Boy to occasionally grab.

Any of these fob covers will instantly remind me, by feel as well as by color, which fob is mine and which belongs to the rental car I happen to be driving... as generally all car fobs tend to be black shiny plastic + fake chrome, i.e. easy to mix up when in a hurry.

Hope this technique helps someone out there.

Bought my lighting fob on eBay for $70. My 2 local dealers said they would program it for $75 & $50. Now my inferior 4 button fab is hidden in the car in a Faraday cage. If I loose my fob and phone, I can input the code on the drivers door (assuming I have any memory left), remove the fob from the Faraday cage and drive off.

Or just leave the fob where it is, and use the other code to start the car and drive off.
