License plate/Tag renewal

Rolling into my second birthday with my car, and the license plate (tag in the US), is due for it's renewal.
I have a prestige license plate, and typically pay $55. But, no, not this time, my renewal cost is $281.57.

Why?

"Alternatively fuel tax..." Priceless. Penalising me for not using petrol. Wow.

PS: There is more than likely a plethora of posts about this. But, I just had to vent, for a few minutes. Okay, and breathe...

I just renewed $701 here in MN, 2021 GTPE

$75 EV fee is part of that tax.

Minnesota is land of 10,000 taxes. My car before this was a Lincoln MKX tabs were $850.

It’s not a penalty. It’s making you pay your fair share in road maintenance fees, which most drivers pay via gas taxes. As more and more of us switch to EVs, the states are having to find new ways to tax us for road use. If you drive as much as the average person, it’s likely still less than you used to pay when you drove an ICE vehicle.

Are we not paying taxes on the electricity we use? How bout the nearly free electricity that our solar panels may generate for our neighbors use and electric company profits; benefiting our community at large.

Should there be any incentive to drive electric other than purchase costs and possibly car pool lane driving? Perhaps we should increase taxes on the ICE vehicles to make up the difference.

You know full well you are being penalized for using the roads.
$281.57 a year. Cry me a river.
My 2018 F150 this year is $279.65.
My wife 2021 Equinex this year is $412.53.
Both burn gas.

It’s not called a tag in all parts of the US. People near me would have no idea what you’re talking about if you asked about their car’s tag.

How much is the gas tax around your area?
We pay $225 extra for the EV, but by my calculation, it would be less than what we would pay in taxes at the pump.

It's a plate in CA. The tag is the decal that goes on the plate here. ??

As @DugthePug Dad said, my last registration was over $750. I expect this year it'll be down to around $700 when the car hits 3 years of registration. ?‍?

EDIT: I'm actually kind of salty that my Blazer was down to $26 at one point and jumped in the mid-2000s to over $250. ?‍?

yep a plethora of posts about this. I pay $214 in GA every year as an EV fee, most states are charging something now. Personally don't have a problem with it, because road construction/maint in most states comes from the state tax paid on gas and since we don't use any, we're actually not paying for road maint. It's not a big deal with relatively small numbers of EVS on the road now, but what happens when 25-50% of cars are EVs.

in practical terms, while it's not a big thing now, what happens to road construction and maintenance when 25-50% of cars on the road are EVs not paying gas sales tax.

I'm just not sure why all the resistance to this. The amount of tax I pay on the portion of my electricity used monthly to charge my car is tiny, so practically speaking how would you get that portion separated from your electric bill to go into the road maint fund?

I just looked it up for MS, the EV portion is $150 for MS (less than what I pay in GA), the rest are fees you'd pay for any car of similar value.

Was the $750 all because you drive an EV?
Ours is almost $1K a year, but only $225 is EV charges.
