Last night I was driving home from dinner. I had 3 adult passengers in the car. One was in the front passenger seat, and the other two were in the two rear outboard seats. All had their belts fastened during the drive. I stopped and let everyone out of the car. They unbuckled (seat belts all properly retracted), exited the car, and closed all the car doors. Nothing was left in the car or on any seats. After they exited and all doors were closed, I had the following display on the IP. What is it trying to tell me (yes, I know my seat being green means I’ve fastened my seat belts)?

Extra bonus: zoom in on the vehicle image. Notice anything … odd? Hint: I have a US Market car in the United States ???

There's no occupant detection sensors in the rear seat just switches in the buckles. the car has no idea of anyone is in the back seat, it only sees the status of the belts. When a buckle switch goes from buckles to unbuckled you get the warning light even if the person gets out since it has no way of knowing there is no longer a passenger. Same if someone gets in the back and doesn't buckle, it wont show red because it doesn't know someone is there.

Front passenger seat has weight sensors so it knows all.

So either your left rear buckle switch is not working or your passenger there didn't actually have their belt on to begin with.

I understand pressing ok. My issue is the inconsistency. This happens at random and is not repeatable. Also, I know my rear passengers were wearing their seatbelts.
I’m wondering if it’s because my car thinks it’s a Euro-UK-US hybrid of some kind? ?

This happens to me all the time. When the rear passenger exits the warning light stays lit until I exit too, or until I push OK to clear the message.
Again, note the inconsistency here. First, I had two passengers, yet only one seat was highlighted red. Second, as I previously stated, it’s not a consistent behavior.

There’s no good answer. It’s a glitch in the matrix, like so many other little things. Press “ok” and move on.

My mother in law has reached that age where putting on a seat belt is not an easy task. She often plugs into the wrong anchor for the seat position she is sitting in before getting the correct anchor. When she does this the car thinks there are more people in the backseat than are physically in the back seat. Maybe something similar is happening as your rear seat passengers unbuckle?

Right rear passenger unbuckled while you were still driving. Ban them from your car!

I see this issue in both of my Fords. Maverick Hybrid Truck does the same as our Mach-E Premium.
