Not so cold in SOCAL 50F but ok but why does range drop 16 miles for 8 mile trip?

In Socal, isn't 50F basically freezing? ?

Seriously, ambient temperature has that kind of impact on the algorithm. Can be very influential.

As I continue to drive during day, I notice range becomes consistent with distance traveled but not sure range is ok or is it "braking recharge" that brings range into normal.

Battery likes 77 degrees. At 50, you will get lower range. As you start driving, it adjusts the range based on current conditions. Range is fine. All braking, or removing your foot from the accelerator, results in recharging, which has nothing to do with your range changing.

If you are relying on the guess o meter then it will be misleading especially if you don’t have a lot of drive time then it hasn’t learned your driving style yet. I have had my car for 3.5 years and range is relatively close but i still mostly rely on battery % consumption over miles driven to project out. For example, if i go 25 miles and use 10% then roughly 250 miles for 100% start

Will be interesting this winter to see if EVowners learn any lessons from last year bitter cold (Chicago)

They won't. Those were largely people without home chargers, driving for a service, who waited too long. Chicago has a lot of old Tesla Superchargers also.
