Hello, all ...

My old M3P allowed me to set the charge amperage as low as 5A. Since my home runs off solar / batteries and only draws from the grid as a very last resort, I often trickle-charged my old Tesla this way, especially if I knew I didn't need to go anywhere for a couple of days. However, apparently the Mach E doesn't allow me to set this any lower than 32A (7.68kw at 240V, which is higher than the max discharge rate my batteries will handle, so my inverter will start drawing from the grid for the difference). Has this been an issue for anyone else, and if so, did you find a way to solve it?

Regards,

John

Your car has no way to externally control the charge rate at all.
Your options are to either use an EVSE and monitor to automatically charge using excess solar (such as Emporia)….or use an EVSE that allows you to manually set the rate.

Ford doesn’t have that capability unfortunately.

You’ll need an EVSE that can let you control that dynamically or better yet can tie in with your solar system to automatically limit amperage to charge only on solar.

I bought a $99 cheap charger on Ebay which allowed me to set charge rate lower than 30 AMPs because I am charging from my Dryer 240 outlet, which has a 30 AMP circuit breaker, which pops if it go higher. I lost my Ford Charger so I don't know if it allowed setting the max charge rate.

Yeah sure with my Emporia EVSE I'm forever dialling the charging rate (amps) up or down to best use my solar over the week. If you have an Emporia Vue as well it will even dynamically adjust the charging rate to try to surf the excess solar, although if I need the car to charge I usually manually set the rate in the Emporia app rather than letting the "excess solar" algorithm surf the difference.

Works with any car, including the MachE.

You could go L1 with your mobile charger if you have no need to charge quickly.
Yes of course, but with my M3P I had the option of increasing the amps when I really needed to charge more quickly, and setting it lower when I didn't. I have my charger plugged into a 240V outlet in my garage.

As stated, can't do that with the Mach-e.

You asked for ideas to solve it. I am old school and would manually do it myself if I did not have some automatic control within my solar energy system. No way with the car.
