Hi All

Amazon has a good deal on these charging pads. Since the manufacturer already has a pad, very finicky to use, by using this will it over heat the installed one?

any insight would be appreciated

I ordered this yesterday and it's out for delivery today. If I notice anything weird I'll let you know. I'm assuming that stock charging pad underneath will not be activated while using the aftermarket one. The one on amazon gets power separately via USB-C so I can't imagine this will be an issue.

That was my concern is the over heating of the manufactured one. Yea I’d love to hear your review. The ones on Amazon all sound great except 2. One was poor quality and the other is two phones could not sit side by side. I have the 15 ProMax and partner has Samsung S22 Ultra. Both larger phones

I have one installed, no overheating issues, the stock one doesn’t get activated, the phone is too far with the new charger above it. I will say, if you’re very nitpicky it does have a charging cable with a big bump in it that sticks out a little, still hard to notice but it’s there. It bugged me for a couple of days but now I don’t mind

No not overheat the installed one, but I had issues with mine draining my 12v battery while it was plugged into the usb outlet and my car wasn’t on, so friendly heads up to unplug whenever you’re not driving to avoid that

For the record, the charging pucks do NOT activate if there is no phone on them, so the drainage is from something else. It's just how the Qi standard works. You can use a USB-C power meter to verify my claim :)

How do the charging pucks know if a phone is on them?

They send a high frequency ping about once a second. If there is no response they don't activate. The ping itself can be powered by a watch battery for years, its consumption is extremely negligent. Your 12V battery will die from natural causes before that ping can drain even 0.1% from it.
And to clarify - just a metal object won't activate it either. Once the ping receives an answer, then an authentication begins which is basically a series of high frequency transmissions that communicate charging protocol, voltage and amperage - the charger sends its supported array of charging protocols, amps and volts, then the phone receives that compares to what it supports and is willing to activate to (based on charge level, temperature, user settings etc) and responds to the charger "Hey, we both support X protocol at Y amps and Z volts, let's do that), then the charger sends an acceptance ping and this is when the actual charging and power draw begins.
I am too familiar with this stuff now as I've been working on another device for the past few months and I've been monitoring and measuring stuff with an oscilloscope and a USB-C power meter.

Interesting, all i can say is i used it after a few months of owning my mach E, only about a week or so into it having it plugged in, I went out of town for a weekend and left twraps charging mat plugged in, nothing else was plugged into USB’s. I received a low 12V battery warning and when i got home I couldn’t open my doors or anything. Had to unplug the 12V and reset it. This was about 9 months ago. Never plugged the twraps charging mat back into my car and have never received another 12V low battery. So maybe just a weird coincidence

Either a weird coincidence or a defective controller (on our end)... a few ways to tell:
1. If you have a USB-C meter that's the easiest way to tell -> https://www.amazon.com/YOJOCK-Multimeter-Capacity-Voltmeter-Detector/dp/B0B99Z2GJK/

If you just keep it plugged with no phone, if the USB-C meter is not activating or not showing any power draw, then it's not our pad, just a weird coincidence. If it does show power draw then just DM me for a replacement - that will indicate a defective controller (the controller is inside the aluminum casing that says TWRAPS on it...the one that sticks out between the pad and the USB-C port).

2. If you don't have a meter, another way to tell is this -> plug our charger and leave it there for say 20-30 min, no phone on top. Then touch it - is it hot to the touch? If yes, then defective controller. If not - then something else. If it's drawing energy but has no place to transfer it to (like a phone) that energy will dissipate as heat, so it's an easy test to make without any extra equipment.

Cool, I’ll test these out in the next few days and reach out if I detect a power draw. Appreciate it.

I've had the TWRAPS charging pads in all three of my Mach-E's and never had one issue. My favorite interior mod for sure.
