I just washed my car using the two bucket system with a microfiber wash mitt and Maguiar’s Gold Class auto soap. I keep seeing people sing the praises of these foam cannons but I’m trying to understand why they are so good. Don’t you have to clean with a mitt anyway? Not doubting folks, just trying to understand why it’s such a great way to wash the car. I have a pressure washer so all I would need is that foam gun attachment (I think) but wanted to be convinced.

I use a quarter of the soap? Meh. I still use a clean rinse bucket and a mitt to scrub.

But power tools - fuck yeah!

There are areas like the roof channels that the pressure washer definitely cleans better than the two bucket method. /source I was a two bucket user until just after Black Friday when I scored my pressure washer for $115.

This is a fascinating thread.

I imagine it has to do with cold weather and how easy/hard it is on your back. Personally, my sciatic nerve aches a bit just thinking about washing a whole car with a foam mit, especially when it's not nice and warm out.

I wonder if the SPCA (society for the prevention of cruelty to automobiles) is going to come after me for saying this, but I've never not ridden my cars through "soft cloth" automatic car washes, like weekly, especially in the winter when there's salt all over the roads here. Bear in mind, I keep cars like 7-9 years and 2-300K miles on average. That's a lot of trips through a car wash.

Do they eventually look less shiny? Yep. Will a coat of high quality car wax remedy that? I assume so but I'm probably the wrong guy to ask. Do my cars suffer outer body or undercarriage rust-through? Nope.

My parents hardly ever used car washes and when they did, they never sprung for the undercarriage flush. Their cars never lasted very long.

In a few years, if you see a DMG Mach-E that's squeaky clean but sporting a matte finish, with all the badges falling off, it's a good bet that'll be me.*

*Okay so I'll tend to hand wash the front more during bug season but it's relatively short here. Salt's the bigger problem.

I’ve never heard of this. Do you think it helps get the bug guts off?
Best and cheap solution is to use a used Bounce dryer sheet. Wet it with water and scrub bug guts away. Finish with a towel to dry.

I've used a foam cannon hooked up to an electric pressure washer a couple times and yes, you still have to clean using a mit. I'm back to the 2 bucket method now.
