i think it's safe to say it doesn't make sense for me to buy this car out.
Thanks for your perspective. My numbers may be different from yours, but maybe directionally similar.

The right answer is less clear to me. To purchase my 2021 GT, I'll have to pay ~$23,000 next year. But if I let it go and buy a new GT (Rally Edition is the one I like), MSRP is $62,000. That's a LOT of extra money to spend for a car that's really pretty similar to what I'm already driving. Sure, it's newer and better. But $39,000 better? That's hard to swallow.

The Lucid Gravity is amazing. Go test drive it. And 440 mile range. Only shocker is the price… you won’t walk away from it for less than $102,000, possibly more when you see the cool options they have.
Iā€˜m looking forward to a test drive here in the Bay Area soon, if I can find one. And yes, I’ve already priced one out. ??

How do you take a huge loss on a 5 year old Leaf? Relatively speaking, I mean.

The Leaf cost less than the depreciation on most of these expensive EVs.
And the battery on the Leaf has the same 8-year-100,000 miles, doesn't it? I understand that Nissan can be horrible to deal with regarding battery replacement, but still most folks either got a replacement battery or a buyback, from everything I read while being a short term Leaf owner.

(purchased a used 2018 with only 18,000 miles and a 92% SOH battery. So I was in cheap and learned a lot about living with an EV)

did you ever get bluecruise on the 2021? 3yrs of BC was included in my purchase price and it is actually very useful to me for long x-country trips. that might be worth it depending on your situation (surely not worth 39k but just one more feature that might add up to it)

the 2011 leaf did not have the 'lizard' pack and the degradation was really bad. however it was not out of spec per nissan. the range was about 110mi when we bought the car and at the end, 65 miles. the car never lost more than 2 battery bars and apparently that's what nissan used to decide if the battery was bad or not. i probably could have paid to have a lizard pack put in but i decided it was good money after bad. at that time we leased a bolt which was a million times more useful than the leaf.

IIRC the only people that got buybacks were the ones in arizona where the hot asphalt absolutely destroyed the batteries in very short order.

ironically there was a class-action settlement surrounding the battery on the original leaf; the remedy was free ChaDeMO charging. i'm reasonably sure all the charging i did at whole foods is what killed my battery - the leaf does not have active battery temperature management (and apparently still does not.)

i guess huge is relative but when i sold the car i got about 20% of what it cost new. if it had been an ICE it would have been worth a heck of a lot more. no one wanted a car with 65 mile range when there were so many other, better EVs available at the time we sold it. should have leased that one but had never done a lease before and decided it was easier to just purchase. big mistake.

Um, 20% depreciation?

Cars generally lose 10% when they leave the lot and 20% in the first year. Unless I’m not understanding where the huge loss is here?

Yes, mine is a Job 2, so it had BlueCruise from the get go. Three years, and they just threw in a fourth year for free. But I prefer to drive without BlueCruise, so it doesn't affect my decision. I don't do long trips with this car. Thanks.

I was simply being snarky about the fact my 2023.5 EV has probably depreciated more in 6 months than a brand new 2011 Leaf's MSRP. ?

But another point was that a fully depreciated low mileage healthy battery Leaf, in a mild climate especially, can be a low risk method to dip your toes in the EV world if you are timid.
Although I soon discovered that a Bolt probably would have been a better choice. I test drove both and naively chose based on which was just a nicer car to drive (subjective). Nobody could have been less informed than I was.

Alas, it wouldn't have mattered much though because either was very likely to lead to where I am now. I was destined to learn what I learned and become a happy GTPE EVer.

yeah point taken, after all the problem with the GTPE and the buyout @ end of options is the massive depreciation. it's just that relative to the nissan versa (which the leaf was based on) the resale value of the leaf was abysmal.

Two things caught my attention.

1) Your ability to incorporate the poodle in another post. Love it.
2) Your comment on the Lightning. I have never been a truck guy, but I admit I am overly concerned about the bad HVBJB design in the MME....so I have been thinking about my next move....might be a Lightning.

The MME is famous for its poor HVBJB, any idea what the most concerning issue with the latest model Lightning would be?
He IS the poodle ? he only keeps a human around because he can’t reach the pedals on his own ?

I think I would have problems with geese if I were a Toy. ??
Geese are evil, nasty creatures that should be exterminated, along with their mammalian counterparts - deer ?
