Okay, I don’t take road trips. Car is almost entirely used as a commuter/daily driver. Longest trip in my GTPE was from the Bay Area to LA and back. That was about 11 months ago.
Today I wanted to test it out with a longer trip. So I want from Marin to Rockin, CA and back this afternoon. My in-laws are thinking about moving out to that area, so I just set my destination to one of the closest DC fast chargers out there in Ford Nav, an EA station 112.5 miles away. Where my in-laws might be moving was an additional 29 miles away from the charger. Added that as the secondary stop.
Charged at home to 90 percent, temp approx 65 degrees. Set off, and the car gave me a whole bunch of warnings about “insufficient battery”. Never seen that before, but I don’t use Ford Nav a lot. Cancelled my route and made the EA my final destination in Ford Nav, and the car stopped beeping at me.
Drove like normal, with heated seat at 1, heated wheel on, and no climate, just fan for bringing fresh air in. Trip up was mostly between 70-75 mph, some moments up to 80 to pass, and a few traffic slowdowns. Trip efficiency was reported to be 2.8 miles per KwH. Temp was dropping on the way up. Arrived at EA charger 113 miles away with 46 percent battery remaining.
EA is still garbage, site had six chargers, 11 CCS handles, 1 CHAdEMO, four of the chargers were 350 kw. Two chargers were broken/unavailable, and one of the charger handles on another charger was broken/unavailable. Cars were at the rest.
Plugged into the operational handle on the half broken 350 unit, was getting 36 kw. All the preconditioning was wasted, gained 3 percent in 9 minutes. Unplugged, moved to another charger, found that one broken/unavailable, went back to my starting charger, plugged back in, peaked at 40. Walked away, came back, found the 150 combo unit free, unplugged at 77 percent, plugged into the combo, got ramp up to 67 kw straight away. Charged up to 85, my ending charge rate on that charger was better than the peak on the 350 kw.
Drive back was 2.4 miles per kWh efficiency, similar traffic and similar overall driving style on the way back. Slightly colder by 5-10 degrees. Arrived back in Marin with 35 percent remaining battery.
I figure that the car could go 250 miles under these conditions with a full charge, which is pretty close to the EPA rated range of 260, and the temp and speed were not optimal.
