I have a swarming knat/bug problem! Depending on the time of day, my 2025 grabber yellow car gets swarmed with tiny bugs! This has been going on for about three weeks, so it is not just a passing swarm. Also, they do not touch my wife's green Subaru parked just feet away from my car, so it is obviously the color.

I have had a yellow car before, 20+ years ago (not at this location, but the same town) and I do not remember this ever happening. Also, I have had a blue Model 3 before at this location, and it never happened. I bought the car in June, and while everyone told me my car may attract bee's (It never did) no one ever told me it would attract this!

The car is ceramic coated, and I have tried washing it and different sprays that work with my coating, and nothing deters them.

Any advice would help!

I had a company truck that was yellow about 35 years ago. Many times when I came out to the truck from a job, there were bees all over it. I could not drive it with the window down because bees would like to fly in when I would be stopped at a stoplight. Never attracted gnats though.

My daughter’s 2010 Challenger Classic in Detonator Yellow always attracted honey bees. I believe it will be a seasonal thing, and maybe not as many knats every year.

Gemini says…
Yes, gnats, especially fungus gnats, are strongly attracted to bright colors, particularly yellow, which is why yellow sticky traps are so effective for catching them by mimicking the wavelengths of light from decaying vegetation where they feed. This attraction is a form of phototaxis, where they move towards light sources that signal food and breeding sites, making yellow a powerful lure.

Why Yellow Works:
  • Mimics Food Sources: The yellow color reflects light wavelengths similar to those from decomposing plant matter, signaling a potential food source and place to lay eggs to the gnats.
  • Visual Lure:
Gnats' eyes are adapted to see these specific light patterns, drawing them to the yellow traps

In the Sunnyvale area years ago, a gold Bronco attracted swarms of bugs at certain times of year. When I moved to the desert, my Ruby Red Ford Fusion attracted bugs again, at certain times, usually late summer or early fall. My Glacier Grey MME has done the same thing a time or two. It was explained to me that these were water bugs attracted to the extremely shiny surfaces, mistaking them for water. In the desert, when that happens, they die almost immediately because of the hot surface. As soon as you drive away, they blow off.

Got tired of bugs landing on my yellow golf balls that’s why I started using white again😳

Move north! I haven't seen any bugs in a few months and it'll be a few more months until I see any more bugs. I guess I could complain about moving snow off my driveway.
