I installed IOS 18.1 on the iPhone 16 Pro Max today, requested to be added to the Apple Intelligence waitlist, and was very shortly thereafter provided with Apple Intelligence.

Heretofore, the Apple Photos library has been a deep dark ocean where nothing could be found. This has changed with the arrival of Apple Intelligence.

Now one can:

"Find and name people and pets in Photos on iPhone
The Photos app sorts photos and videos of people, dogs, and cats in the People & Pets collection (or the People collection if no pets appear). You can name a person, dog, or cat directly from a photo or video in your photo library, or in People & Pets."

https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/find-and-name-people-and-pets-iph9c7ee918c/18.0/ios/18.0

Search for specific photos and videos with Apple Intelligence:

https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/use-apple-intelligence-in-photos-iphf7de217f0/ios

This is the game changer. It works.

The shortcoming I have found is that Apple Intelligence will not allow me to add my Mustang Mach-E as a "Pet". I did try. The documentation indicates that only cats and dogs are allowed.

For the inevitable cry baby post whiners on this forum, please note that this post is under "Automotive Discussions & Off Topic Lounge". Thanks in advance.

Hasn’t pets and people always been there? I have a 14 Pro with that feature and I’m pretty sure it’s been there for a few years.

Funny thing, I never assigned names to them. It figured it out on its own.

Pets was added in iOS 17, people goes back way further.

Apple AI is supposed to improve what you can search but this isn’t an example of the new stuff.

I've been sort of underwhelmed with the Apple Intelligence so far. Siri got a new voice but is still really stupid at times. For example, if you ask when a business closes (and it's past closing), she'll just say "X is currently closed" no matter how many ways you ask her what time it closes or opens. She still mishears complex words and chooses the "popular" option rather than the best one based on context. I would say this is just an incremental improvement to Siri. If you use something like ChatGPT it's far more powerful and intelligent, I think they'll have to end up using that in order to get a really huge improvement in Siri's abilities.

I'm also not a big fan of the new Siri voice. They are trying too hard with some of the inflections, emphasis, pauses, and smugness. Her responses are too colloquial sometimes. "Pretentious Siri" is my nickname for her now.

The writing tools that include proofreading and summarize are probably the most useful feature so far.

I also took the new hearing test, that's a cool feature that can replace an audiologist visit.

The call transcription thing is nifty. Some of the stuff mentioned for photos has existed pre-AI. I think for a couple of years now, if you searched "dog" or "car" or "license plate" or "blue" in the photos app, it would bring up objects matching the search term.

Yeah, the new operating system is really a lot of fun. I’m enjoying it. I can say Since I can’t name my car as a pet, I bought the Wife and I a brand new pair of the latest Hoka shoe, the Mach X 2, so since we have two pair, I guess it kind of matches the name of my car now since it’s an X4 2 pairs of shoes times two?

Count me in as one of the "underwhelmed". After upgrading and dealing with the confounding "waitlist", I have to say this is a pretty embarrassing set of features. I have a iPhone 16 Pro and it's becoming clear that Apple is struggling to innovate like they used to. The new camera button is interesting, but pretty unnecessary and I don't find myself using it. The "Apple Intelligence" features, especially the ones discussed here, are things that Google has ben doing well for years.

And before someone take this the wrong way, I'm not an Android/Google guy, and I've been trying to get out of the Google ecosystem for years. But come on, what happened to Apple's strategy of waiting quietly and then innovating on top of a market category so dramatically that the world changes and companies are put out of business overnight? All they showed us this week is that Apple Intelligence might be pretty lame. I'll wait for 18.2 and future updates before making a conclusion, but wow, this is pretty unlike Apple.

Apple Intelligence isn't what is touted when I installed the latest iOS 18.1 on my 16 Pro.

All I got for the Ford Pass app is a generic screen enabled for AI.

Supposed to "learn from this app" but hasn't done anything intelligent yet....

18.1 doesn't have the ChatGPT integration, that will come in 18.2. The dev beta has this integration, though I haven't really tested it much yet.

There is a limit to what all you can do with a cellphone. We are at the stage where marketing has to convince you that new features will change your life.

The general actually changes are faster cpu/gpu and battery life every year. While those improvements have also got a brick wall and are very incremental.

Yeah, probably some truth to this. Oh, and camera, they always improve the camera.

Just get rid of the notch up top and it will be the most revolutionary upgrade in the last decade.

What makes ChatGPT so useful (I have the paid version, but regular is OK too) is that you can discuss its answer. Seldom does it take even 2 corrections before it gives you the info you want. Siri insists when I travel (Puget Sound area) that I take a ferry - as though ferries ran every 10 minutes - it has NO idea of schedules. You cannot say, so far as I know, no ferries today.
