Where is it stated that EV drivers can use the HOV downtown with a single occupant? I've been looking for that information, but haven't found it.
See Below:

https://dps.georgia.gov/high-occupancy-vehicle-lanes

"The following vehicles may use HOV Lanes:

  • Vehicles with two or more (living and not pre-infant) persons.
  • Emergency Vehicles (Law Enforcement, Fire, Emergency Medical)
  • Motorcycles
  • Buses
  • Alternative Fuel vehicles properly licensed with an AF license plate.
Persons who violate the HOV lane law are guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable under Code Section 40-6-54."

OK, but you need to have the AF license plate (which I don't intend to pursue).

I mean, the options seem pretty straight forward. We can either push for a legislative change (unlikely), use the AF plate, or don't use the AF plate.

I'd like to hear if you ever get pulled over in the HOV's using the MME without the plate though.

Well, for one place, the signs along the interstate in the HOV lanes

I don't drive downtown very often, but when I last did a few weeks ago, I looked at the HOV signs along the connector and didn't see any references to EVs. Can someone snag a picture of such a sign in case I'm ever pulled over?

Well, again, you must have the AFV (alternative fuel vehicle) tag. Just having an EV is not enough. If you have an EV but not the AFV tag you can't use the HOV lane as a single occupant. But, anyway, here is the sign (this is from Google Street View on I-85 northbound just after it splits from I-75)

Certified AFV is a legal term in Georgia law, and that green tree symbol is prominently displayed on the AFV tag, so if you had the tag you'd know what that sign meant

Also, for what it's worth, motorcycles do not need a special tag to use the HOV lanes. They're kind of obvious. The need for the AFV tag is because it's a) not obvious you're in an alternative fuel car and b) more than just electric cars qualify. Things like natural gas vehicles qualify and for a while "flex fuel" vehicles qualified (which is why you'll see F-150s with that tag) but I *think* the flex fuel qualification was removed

OK, for the sake of beating a dead horse, since I have a "Prestige" (vanity) plate, and don't plan to get an AFV plate, I'm out of luck. Correct?

You can not use any of the EV perks--free HOT lane use on I-85, or single-occupancy HOV use downtown, without an AFV tag. Period. Doesn't matter what other tag you have. If you don't have this tag:

you are out of luck. And you cannot get the AFV tag personalized

Also another note of clarification: you pay the EV fee ($250) regardless of whether or not you get the AFV tag. The AFV tag costs an extra $35 on top of the EV fee. Plug-in hybrids don't pay the EV fee if they don't get the tag, but do if they do get the tag. Any other eligible vehicle (flex fuel, natural gas, etc) does not pay the $250, even if they get the AFV tag

According to DOR (link below), flex fuel is still considered under the AFV fees and benefits.

Interestingly enough, according to:
https://afdc.energy.gov/laws/all?st...e plates are subject, for an AFV license plate.

Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Annual Fee
Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) are subject to an annual licensing fee of $320.92 for commercial vehicles and $213.88 for non-commercial vehicles. These fees apply to PEVs and FFVs only if they have an AFV license plate.

But on the DOR's website:

https://dor.georgia.gov/annual-alternative-fuel-vehicle-fees-faq

My vehicle runs exclusively on electricity. If I exchange my alternative fuel vehicle license plate for another plate type, do I still owe the alternative fuel vehicle fee?
Yes, the fee will still be due. For pure electric vehicles, the alternative fuel vehicle fees are dependent on vehicle type, not the license plate type, and will still have to be paid regardless of which license plate is placed on the vehicle.

Has anyone that's received their MME in GA paid this fee?

Okay, thought the flex fuel loophole had been closed. That's dumb, there's no reason an F-150 today should be getting an alternative fuel tag

And yes, I paid the EV fee on my registration and I do not have the AFV tag. My birthday is in May (today, actually) and I took delivery of my car in March, so I had to basically instantly renew my tag as soon as I got it, and the EV fee was on it. The fee was also on the tag that the dealer applied for, but it's prorated

Honestly, $230 a year just because the state isn't getting it's fuel tax. Highway robbery, a little too literal for my taste.

I fully agree and I don't expect this bass ackwards tax to be corrected anytime in the future. I actually started another thread about this. I rather be taxed based off of mileage, which should be able to be reported by any dealership, insurance agency, or emissions station.

Or hear me out. We're using vehicles that dont produce emissions, and Georgia has close to 50% reliance on Natural Gas for electricity, over 27% ifrom Nuclear, and almost 12% from coal.

That means a fully electric vehicle in our state requires ~3,400 lbs of CO2 from its power needs in a year, compared to a gasoline engine that produces 11,435 lbs of CO2.

Maybe, because we're doing something that's healthier for the environment we should get a tax deduction instead of a ridiculous fee for $230.

So on the list so far:
- Peach pass free access at any peach pass (not just I-85) to AFV's.
- AFV plate's with "prestige" plates. Aka allowing you to pick your license plate #.
- Removing the AFV Annual fee.
- Tax deductions would be welcome.

Locally, not every power company offers rebates for hiring an electrician to install a 240v circuit for charging in your home, nor do they all offer a rebate for purchasing a charger either. Only Georgia Power offers these as far as I'm aware.
