That’s only used for battery cell module replacement. It involves dropping the pack, opening the battery, and hooking up to the new cell module on the bench. That is not a routine service, only when required by warranty to replace failed modules.

Again, this was a bogus service the dealer just made up to make more money by scamming customers. Your pack automatically balances itself, no action is required. It’s in the same category as a blinker fluid service.
I was under the impression that the Mach-E battery did not have replaceable modules. I learned something today.

They’re trying to take advantage of you. Just don’t let them change your blinker fluid.
Hey I have my blinker fluid 2x per year. That and my muffler bearings. The dealer says it keeps my car running great.

Laughed out loud at the comment choosing the kick in the balls for $50 instead of the balancing. I loved it so much, I signed up so I could comment instead of lurk!

I just dropped off my 2021 GTPE with 27000 miles off for the charge cord recall. They recommended a battery balancing service as recommended maintenance. Can someone tell me what that is and do I need it?
Thanks
It is a thing but can’t think how it’s possible on the Mache-e at all and then for just $150 which is barely much more than the cost of some work on a diagnostic machine.

During my Level 4 Techsafe EV training I seem to recall that we did this on a Toyota (Prius I think) which, of course, is a hybrid where we dismantled the battery and placed the modules consisting of a number of cells (7 each I seem to remember but could be wrong) on a charging rig connecting them in parallel.

We charged them, in parallel, and tested the fully charged voltage of each then eliminated the modules with lowest voltage/s substituting with good/ better modules.

When even a main dealer bullshits me attempting to sell aircon refresh/antibac, engine flushes, fuel system flushes etc at servicing time, sometimes amounting to a total of £500 I ask if that’s the Manufacturer’s recommendation or theirs, they have to answer it’s theirs and I say well do only what the Manufacture recommends.

Did some digging and it is a real thing.
The Mach e handles it all the time internally. However, if the battery misbehaves it may need some attention by specialized equipment.

Looks like service department balancing would only need being done on a rare occasion. Not routine.

In most cases, the battery balancing process for electric vehicles like the Ford Mustang Mach-E is primarily managed internally by the vehicle's onboard battery management system. This system monitors the state of charge of each individual cell within the battery pack and adjusts the charging and discharging processes as needed to keep the cells balanced.

However, there may be instances where the battery pack requires additional attention or maintenance beyond what the onboard system can handle. In such cases, the service department or authorized technicians may perform manual or specialized procedures to balance the battery pack.

For example, if a cell within the battery pack becomes significantly out of balance with the others, it may require individual attention or replacement by trained technicians. Additionally, periodic maintenance or diagnostics performed by the service department may include checks and adjustments to ensure the overall health and balance of the battery pack.

So, while the primary responsibility for battery balancing lies with the vehicle's internal systems, there may be instances where the service department plays a role in ensuring the optimal performance and longevity of the battery pack.

And one other reply:

  1. Internal Battery Balancing (Handled by the Mach-E):
    • The Ford Mustang Mach-E comes equipped with a Battery Management System (BMS).
    • The BMS monitors and manages each cell’s voltage, temperature, and SoC.
    • It automatically balances the cells during regular charging and discharging cycles.
    • The internal balancing ensures that cells are charged and discharged evenly to maintain optimal performance and extend battery life.
  2. Service Department Battery Balancing:
    • When you take your Mach-E to the service department, they can perform additional checks and maintenance.
    • However, specific manual battery balancing is generally not necessary for most EV owners.
    • The BMS already handles cell balancing internally.
    • Service departments may focus on other aspects of battery health, such as diagnostics, firmware updates, and physical inspections.
