I like the new Rangers HVAC physical buttons setup, although I prefer something cleaner. A similar setup to our 2019 Explorer Sport would be acceptable (+/- for Temp and Fan Speed) in addition to touchscreen adjustability:

Agreed. And this Sony head unit brings back memories!

All I can say is, but KNOB! Yes it does 10 different things but not what you'd actually expect! KNOB brings excitement and joy to your HVAC turning down to 65 degrees when you're trying to turn down the audio volume on a phone call. But the second time you try it adjusts the radio volume to 25 but the phone call audio is still at 30, then turns the seat heater to 3. The excitement I would lose is far too much to give me 6 physical buttons like an Ocean. But because I said Ocean Ford will hire the Fisker software team and it'll go down hill from there.

FWIW Ford seems to be going away from portrait and towards landscape in all of their newer products, the Ranger seems to have been caught in between Ford’s shift away from portrait, hence it not getting their new Google based OS. All of the new landscape screens have the HVAC controls permanently located at the bottom of the screen with no physical switchgear.

On a side note, you guys know you can just voice command your HVAC right? Just short press the VR button and “temperature 72”.

Buttons for HVAC. Knob for volume control. Info screen that is more integrated into the dash, i.e., the Ranger and Lightning. Or, moveable, i.e. the European Explorer EV. And more oriented to the driver. Or, change orientation of screen to landscape.

Never hurts to have redundant physical controls.

I still sometimes reflexively look for the hatch button that isn't there.

At the bare minimum I want the following physical buttons-

heated seats
Cooled seats
Trunk

HVAC would be nice but not as important to me, the current touch buttons seem fine for that.

I'm satisfied with the voice command for HVAC temp and the volume +/- button on the steering wheel. I agree that nailing an iPad to the dashboard in portrait orientation is very sloppy. Buttons for trunk open/close and camera view on/off would be good.

Buttons are never obsolete! Can't operate your hvac if the screen dies.
This. My brother’s Grand Cherokee screen died 60 days after his warranty expired. $2500 to fix; he can’t afford that right now so he’s driving without HVAC and nav screen. It’s a good thing he’s lived in our hometown forever and knows his way around - but he did get lost recently and had to stop for directions! I’m glad we paid for extended warranty’s on both our cars.

Your brother's situation underscores the importance of redundant physical controls! Voice control, touchscreen, etc.. are nice but useless if the screen dies. Plus given all the software issues we've been seeing I want something that can't be affected by software gremlins.

Love Asheville btw. :)

Looking at the 2024 Ranger for inspiration. The buttons can be more cosmetically elegant but would like to see dedicated HVAC controls.

I like the electronic buttons on the MME.
When I bought my MME in 2021 the volume switch only controled volume. Now it controls, volume, temperature, and blower speed.
That's the value of having over-the-air updates.

No thank you. I like the level of buttons we have now. I only need physical controls on the steering wheel and a volume knob in the center. The way ford implemented the volume knob on our cars is brilliant.

The ranger’s controls would be awful in a non-truck vehicle.
we don’t need a plethora of buttons for every arcane feature of the vehicle.
Am I the only one who’s figured out how to use voice controls?

Sigh… of COURSE you can. Check out page 369 of the MY21 owner’s manual ?‍?
