Occasionally lately when I put in a destination using Apple CarPlay the screen has the car in the wrong place and it wanders around all over the map. When it finally gets it right it will freeze and be two turns behind before it catches with the car and then freezes again and goes through the same thing again. Sometimes if I cancel the directions and request it again it says it doesn’t know where I am. Is this likely a problem with the phone, the car or CarPlay.

Happens to me occasionally when I’m leaving the garage and navigating the urban jungle. It’s probably a cell signal issue. My solution is to look at the phone and figure out the next couple of steps and letting the car do its thing. It helps if you have your phone on the wireless charging pad.

How’s the cell signal where you live?

It’s a known Apple ? issue. They changed their gps protocol a few generations ago and things aren’t always quite right.

Move the phone so that it’s underneath the armrest. That should force the phone to use the car’s gps signal instead of its own. That generally works for me when it occurs.

The signal is usually good. I will try putting it in the charging pad when I have the problem. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks. I will try to force it to use its own gps when I have this problem.

Which model iPhone? I have had more issues (although they’re reasonably rare) with my iPhone 15 pro max than I did with my iPhone 12.

I don’t think this is a phone issue. I had the same problem for months in early ‘24 when I bought my ‘23. I tried moving the phone around, including in the wireless charger tray, both on the charging side and the non-charging side. Didn’t seem to matter. I read some where that Caplay uses the car’s cell radio. If so, points to a bug in Ford’s software or a hardware issue.

It finally disappeared. Did a Ford software update fix it? Seems like it. ?‍♂

I will try all the suggestions and if it still has problems I’ll take it in and report what they tell me. The problem is it doesn’t happen every time and i don’t use nav that often but i will start using it even when I know where i am going.

I used to experience this fairly regularly when using the wireless charging pad. Wired charging or just moving the phone off the wireless charging pad worked. The bug disappeared for awhile, then came back, but seems to be ok now for me.

You'll be wasting your time asking a dealer for help, especially if it is intermittent. They will likely tell you it is a problem with your phone, and I really do suspect this is an Apple issue.

When connected to CarPlay, iPhone navigation is supposed to use the car’s gps location and compass. For some reason, the Mach E seems to rarely pass this information to CarPlay, so it uses the phone’s GPS antenna, which isn’t going to be as reliable as the car’s, especially if you keep your phone in your pocket.

I bought a MagSafe phone mount that holds the phone right next to the car’s screen, allowing the phone to get a better gps signal. I have no issues when the phone is mounted there.
