I plan on holding onto my Mach-E for a long time too. For me, when the time comes, I’d want it to be:

-electric
-SUV
-able to drive in 2PD mode
-perforated seats
-light interior
-not dark exterior
-sporty
-great looking/interesting vehicle

If my Mach-E got into a crash and was totaled, I would strongly consider waiting on a Fisker Ocean.
My my pops is impatient. Stubborn in a sense. Nature of how we are. He didn't want to wait for second year anything and the unknown of newest EV vehicle.

He's got an order for the SS Blazer EV. SMH in all aspects.

He didn't want to wait for the second year for that.

It's probably my fault for touting my EV. FOMO I guess?

<20 min 10-80% fast charge times and 400 miles of EPA range in the same form factor and around the same price of $60-70k. Based on my experience living with the current 260 miles of range of I have, I would never, ever go lower than this. Won’t even consider sub 300 for the next car (which is ~3 years out). Real world winter range of 200 miles is just not enough.

It's gonna be hard finding all the features I like in the Mach-E, plus:

- Smoother, luxury suspension that's less jarring over city streets
- Sits taller
- 300+ mile range

The Blazer EV looks pretty nice. Although I really want to see what Lincoln comes up with as I assume it will have the Sync4 screen and system we're already familiar with.

Your list is very good, and I will repeat some of it. I agree with really loving the Mach E and it being a great first EV. I will probably keep it a while, at least 8 years. At a minimum, I’d like the next EV to do everything the Mach E already does well, plus the following:

10-90% in < 15 minutes.
Slightly more range (350+)
Retractable shade over glass roof
Cooled seats
Better (smoother) suspension
Towing
Allow me to tap into the battery (V2L, etc.)
Better tires from the factory
<60K MSRP (or maybe slightly higher adjusted for inflation)

That’s about it. The suspension is really the only thing that bothers me frequently about the Mach E right now, I can live with it not having the rest of the things I listed, and in 5+ years, I think the things on that list will be pretty common.

Something similar to my GT-PE but:

No HVBJB issue
No 5 second (or otherwise) limit, or at least a long enough limit so I can put down a few laps at a real road course
Hard top (yeah, I have a hard top now but they took that option away and now all GTs have brittle tops)
Less weight
Tunable suspension (camber, caster, Magneride not dependent on drive mode with better mapping)
Wider wheels from the factory with wider rubber
Real limited slip differentials (Torsens or lockers preferred)
Faster steering that wasn't designed for an econobox
Better charging (by better, I mean if the charging networks are provisioning something newer than 800V, the car has the up-to-date charging architecture)
V2H capability with the right EVSE
Tow hook threads in both front and rear bumpers
Better Qi charger (and a second one for the passenger)
Better protected HV battery case/More obvious lift point indicators

I'm sure I can think of more, but that's a start. Since I already have an MME, it could be a coupe or sedan. I don't really want another compact SUV. It's not like I'm asking for a list the length of my arm. Just something longer than my tail. ??

Next EV? Midsized pickup.

1. Needs to look like a pickup. Looking at you Cyber”truck”.
2. Needs to have a bed that can handle more than two suitcases and a duffel bag. Sorry Rivian (which aren’t sold here anyway).
3. Has to be able to hold and haul a scoop of gravel, or sand or dirt without overloading it or filling it to the gunnels.
4. Needs to be able to carry fencing, lumber, wire bales, or bags of top dressing, fertilizer, bales of hay, livestock supplies and bicycles. Not all at once though. :p
5. Has to have a real world range sufficient to get around this island on the belt highway on a single charge. With reasonable reserves. Or from the northwest corner to the eastern most point and back without charging. At speeds that can vary between 30 and 80 mph.
6. Needs to be available in colors that aren’t best described as grey.

Hmmm....well, if by "next" EV, we're talking second EV, then...

- Smaller hatchback / wagon package...maybe not "city car" small, but smaller than the Mach-E.
- 250+ miles of range
- Low price

But if by "next" EV, we're talking about replacing the Mach-E, then...

- Mid-size hatchback / wagon / crossover package (don't need to go off-road). Maybe a touch smaller than the Mach-E, or just with a smaller hood. :p
- 350+ miles of range (we do travel in it, and extra range means we can go more "rural" where there are fewer chargers).
- Faster charging (150-200 kw average to 80% please).
- A hint of luxury, including nice interior materials and a smoother ride.

Those are the big things...but there are other little things...like my biggest pet peeve is having to dig through a digital menu to turn on heated seats...stupid! So maybe I'll add...

- Good design and ergonomics

I'll include a wild card for the "next" EV (speaking of upcoming Porsche EVs)...

- A CONVERTIBLE!

I’m surprised to see so many people that have EV experience posting that they want huge range numbers. I feel like we should all know that it’s more about total time charging on long distance trips and not as much about stated range numbers.

“but… the network isn’t reliable right now so you need the range in case a planned stop is down”

maybe but we’re also talking about “next EV” which I assume for most people is at least a couple years out (probably more if we’re hoping for the specs people are talking about here with the fantasy land prices attached to those specs). By the time we’re looking at, 1) tesla will have expanded enough new stations to accommodate a lot of the gaps AND 2) the CCS networks will have had enough time to also expand and - hopefully - have gotten their maintenance together or at the very least there will be enough redundancy with frequent enough stops that making it to the next station won’t actually be that big of a deal.

anyway, our next EV will probably be the EX90. Was going to be the R1S but the V2H and autonomous driving aspects of the EX90 I think have won me over.

Range, at extreme high levels can be very helpful. Think 500 miles and you can do a drive from San Fran to Los Angeles without a single charge. Can visit LA to Las Vegas, San Diego to Phoenix, list goes on and on.

Not a ton of people do insane cross country road trips regularly, but if you can do Bay Area to Tahoe without charging, or more common trips, that's probably going to be like 99% of people's use case. Anything else and it's a flight probably.

This, I think is where the killer range will be most useful. Enough to get to your destination without a single charge.

It's probably just me, but I've also seen charging as a waste of time, hidden danger if in the middle of the night (heck, gas stations are probably one of the shadiest places already).

  • Pet Mode
  • Sentry Mode
    • (and the cameras to support it, so you could)
      • Show me the lane I'm changing to on screen.
  • As others have said, if the current stuff worked reliably.
    • I'd like iPhone GPS not go haywire when I get in the car.

BMW iX M60 at $80K not $140K. This is the ultimate non mid sized SUV. Air suspension, wicked acceleration, all safety features, amazing driver assist, luxury level interior and audio. Has everything except an affordable price tag.

R1S with hands drive BlueCruise or SuperCruise or Pro PILOT 2.0. Maybe improve the suspension a little. Most EVs lack the ground clearance and cargo space which the R1S has in space.

I have no intention of replacing the Mustang until there's a new Mustang EV.

My next EV will be a replacement for my Tacoma. It'll be able to get me from home to my favorite camping sites (both established and dispersed) while towing a travel trailer.

I don't even care much about the specifications other than it can >6500 lb and is eAWD. If I can tow my trailer from Flagstaff to Moab, the Dragoons, Tahoe, northern Montana, Acadia, or other, similar places, and I can afford the purchase, then I'll replace the Tacoma. If the infrastructure makes this possible before the perfect EV Truck is built, I'll get an F-150 Lightning.

I don’t upgrade frequently. I wait for big jumps in tech. I drove my last car, a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, for nearly 12 years while I waited for an EV that checked 4 Boxes: (1) Crossover/SUV form factor, (2) stylish inside and out, (3) 250mi+ range, and (4) no more than $50k after tax credit.

The 2021 Mach E 4X Premium was the first EV to satisfy those criteria, and I bought it. And I’ve been generally pleased, but now I’ve learned enough about the pros and cons to have new criteria for my next EV:
  1. Still needs to be a Crossover / SUV form factor. I like the space and sitting a little higher on the road.
  2. Still needs to be stylish inside and out. I will not accept the bubble / blunt-nosed dorkmobile styling, or cheap interiors.
  3. A nice cushy suspension (the Mach E’s “sport tuning” is definitely not this).
  4. Well-insulated, quiet cabin (Mach E is pretty good in this regard).
  5. 350mi+ Range at 75mph.
  6. 15min DCFC from 10% to 90%.
  7. At least 3mi/kWh highway and 4mi/kWh city efficiency.
  8. “Level 2.5” ADAS (Eyes-on but otherwise self-driving on highways, including nav and truly automatic lane changes).
  9. No more than $60k (adjusted for inflation, probably closer to $80k).
This EV doesn’t exist yet, but I think it will within the next 10 years, and the first manufacturer to get there is gonna make a killing.

What’s your list?
