Hello:

I have a 2021 Ford Mustang MACH-E (of course), and I love my EV. Something got me thinking as I was reading the posts here to ask what I believe are geniune questions, and that is:
  • 1) Would you keep, lease/loan, or buy another MACH-E
  • 2) If you wanted to get out of the MACH-E into a different EV or ICE, give your reason to why
  • 3) What is the biggest shortcoming or drawback that is keeping EV buyers from choosing the MACH-E
I can say that since I've owned my MACH-E in August '24, I loved it except for the growing pains of the Level 3 charging (that got fixed), the delay of the Tesla Charging Adapter, delay of the BC 1.3 (and, I still have the issue of the Lane Centering / Lane Change sliders not working), and the Ford Service Center only having one EV guy (which slows down the wait time for repair delivery, except for Quick Lane on maintenance).

So, please let out your thoughts and feelings about your MACH-E experience.

Thank you.

  1. Yes, love the car and I have had mine going on 4 years now with zero issues other than the recalls
  2. I like the new Polestar 3 and 4 and that's only to have a little more comfort. I would still consider another MachE
  3. Lack of Understanding of EV ownership. Having your own charger in your house is huge. Understanding when you go on a long trip you don't have to "fill" the car up. Just charge to what you need. I do believe that when people drive or ride in one, they come back with an appreciation of the capabilities of an EV

Howdy,

I have a 2023 GT PE, purchased in Dec 2022, and will play :).

1. Probably not, as I don't like the the current re-design of the MY2025. If they put or left the "shifter" on the center console, it would be an resounding yes. I love my Mach-E, it has been my favorite car out of all the ones owned over the past 33 years.
2. The only other EV, I even considered was a Tesla Model Y, but I can't get around the lack of an instrument cluster display. I would have do to some serious shopping around if the Mach E is off the table.
3. From my perspective, there are two primary reasons that prevent more wide-spread adoption. Cost and charging. Cost is self explanatory, but charging will take a little bit of more info. Most folks that I talk to, have enormous range-anxiety and do not want to be stranded . This compounded by the hit-or-miss charging infrastructure, and the length of time it takes to "fill-up." I believe that if either of those concerns were mitigated, we would see wider adoption. If both could be solved, well......

thanks!

1. I love my car but always like a new one every 3-5 years

2 I’d reconsider a hybrid for sure.

3. The uneasy feeling of uncertainty of chargers etc. range is maybe another reason. Cost of insurance I’ve heard as well as repairs.

  • 1) Would you keep, lease/loan, or buy another MACH-E
    • No. It is a nice looking, spacious car. But in a RWD LR version ('22), it is very top heavy, with bouncy suspension and subpar product quality. I purposely did not get a '21 so Ford can iron out the early problems, but this is by far the car where I had most quality problems. This is between 4 EVs and few ICEs in comparison.
  • 2) If you wanted to get out of the MACH-E into a different EV or ICE, give your reason to why
    • With torque and PS available, the car should be zippy and not drive like a truck. I have an Ioniq5 AWD also and that thing is a rocket compared to Mach-E, with much better suspension and turning performance. I'll trade in the Mach-E for BMW i4 this year, have a bad feeling about the car being out of warranty
  • 3) What is the biggest shortcoming or drawback that is keeping EV buyers from choosing the MACH-E
    • I think Ford is doing a good job addressing the crowd migrating from ICE to EV as the car behaves as a - heavy - ICE, has a good range and a lot of space. But in comparison to other EVs, it is hard to imagine why people would go to Mach-E if they had another EV already as Mach-E does not excel in any particular category.

Um, …, I think it looks better than almost all of them - at least in the price range, and that includes the Ionic5?. There is the Porsche, sure, but I could buy 3 MME’S for one of those, right.

  • 1) Would you keep, lease/loan, or buy another MACH-E
    • Absolutely. In my nearly 50 years of car ownership, this is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I say that even after living through one HVBJB replacement. I plan on keeping my Mach-E until it drops.
  • 2) If you wanted to get out of the MACH-E into a different EV or ICE, give your reason to why
    • The only potential reason to shift to a different EV (I would never own a "dinosaur" ICE vehicle again) would be to move to a vehicle with a smoother ride. With that being said, I don't mind the stiff ride of my Mach-E. It makes me feel very attached to the road. My ex owns a BMW i4, and I wouldn't trade my Mach-E for her i4 in a million years. The ONLY attribute of the i4 that is better than the Mach-E is the smoother ride. Other than that, it has a cramped interior and is good for hauling almost nothing except for 3 additional adults. The i4 doesn't come standard with adaptive cruise control (which I find unbelievable), the wrap around dash panel frequently shuts down in relatively warm weather, the i4 eats through tires (much more frequently than my Mach-E), and the cost of ownership is significantly more than for my Mach-E (as is typical with any BMW).
  • 3) What is the biggest shortcoming or drawback that is keeping EV buyers from choosing the MACH-E
    • I agree with others who say that charging infrastructure shortcomings are what keeps most people from choosing any EV. I have to admit that if I didn't have the ability to charge at home, and was completely reliant upon the external charging network, I would be hesitant to purchase an EV also. There is nothing more frustrating than waiting in a line, 4 or 5 cars deep, to charge up at a charging station.

I agree, Mach-E does look better. But did you actually drive the Ioniq5?

My point was, Mach-E
- does not drive very well (comfort, handling) compared to competition
- does not charge very fast (Ioniq has 240kW peak charge rate, which does make a difference and I made 6k miles in 4 months with that car)
- does not impress with HW quality (your experience might be different, but my car was in the shop like 6-7 times in 3y and 25k miles. Right now I am waiting for a door to be replaced because the hinge had catastrophic failure (??))
- SW is not great. As much as I like BC, the responsiveness of the screen and the under-utilization of the front display are subpar to other brands
- SW update policy and communication remain a mystery to me after 3y of ownership

I would never buy it, but the GM platform is very capable in comparison. Hyundai with 700V platform is remarkable in charging performance, especially for the price. BMW has unbeatable quality in the segment, I leased 2 of their EVs and never a single issue.

And regarding price, other brands lease much better, can have higher MSRP car for same monthly.

Overall, it's an OK car, but not more. Beautiful though.

Nope.

My point was, … you said it had no redeeming qualities that made it a better choice. I said it looks better than most, including that Ionic 5. I don’t need to drive it to make that claim. Looks actually are a factor for me when buying a new car, as I think it is for a lot of other people too. So, I gotta like how it looks before I buy it.

I’m the original owner on a ā€˜21. It’s been rough (so many recalls), but things are easy now so no issues.
  1. Possibly. Which brings me to…
  2. See below
  3. I honestly have no idea. Is it well known that it exists? Slow charging would be my other guest but I don’t know how many people know that’s an issue that care about it
There were only two options when I bought mine: the Mach E and the ID.4. Didn’t want a Leaf, Bolt, or Tesla. These days there are a lot more choices but I don’t really know that much about many of them.

I know some lack features that I refuse to give up, like CarPlay. That alone would rule out Tesla, Rivian, and GM products.

I had Honda’s before and wouldn’t mind going back, but I don’t think they have an equivalent to what I want. I like having something sportier. And right now Honda doesn’t have an EV platform and I don’t think I’d want to get their first one. I’ve been through enough on the Mach E.

I do like my Mach E. It’s gained a heat pump (good), the much better shocks on premium (fantastic), and cooled seats right (woo!). On the other hand I liked my hands-free lift gate and don’t want to give that up, such an odd regression. I don’t care about the drunk.

I’m tired of ā€œwe invented worse door handlesā€ from every EV.

My personal desires don’t exist in any one vehicle:
  • Smooth ride
  • Luxurious interior
  • Well designed controls
  • Good range (250 is fine, I could do less)
  • Fast charging (maybe <20m)
  • Ventilated seats
  • Strong AC (ours is ā€˜ok’)
  • Hands free trunk
  • Peppy/fast
  • Real leather
  • I’d be happy much smaller I think
  • Kinda miss having a sedan or hatchback as opposed to SUV
  • 360 overhead
  • CarPlay
  • A good price (IMO for what I’m getting)
  • Established EV program

There are very luxurious EVs, but they tend to be big. There are smaller ones but they’re not as peppy and tend to be cheaper on the interior.

Who wants a fast Mini sized EV with a luxury interior? Not enough people for it to exist, let alone at what I’d judge a reasonable cost.

I’ve never been in the Mini EV, but the round screen just seems like an instant ā€œnoā€ to me.

They stopped making the Fiat 500e right? That might be great, but as I get older I suspect I’d like a more luxurious interior than what I’m guessing they have.

I’m really really over the giant car trend. I’d be happy to go back to my Accord as an EV or something more civic sized too.

TLDR: nothing better happen to my car because I don’t have the slightest clue what I would do.

I have no intention of leaving my First Edition because now that I’ve worked out all the kinks under warranty the car is basically problem free, and there still isn’t something clearly better out there at a reasonable price point.

I wish the car had faster DCFC - 800v instead of 400v. And that the IPC was a bit prettier. And that the suspension was cushier. Those are basically my only gripes. So genuine question: what’s better out there that doesn’t sacrifice in other major ways or doesn’t cost at least $100k?? Even the super luxury EVs are still using basically the same battery and charging tech.

My kids ask me if I could have any car, what would it be, and I honestly don’t know. This one? I’m happy with it. I’ll upgrade when the battery/charging tech meaningfully improves to make DCFC less of a pain in the ass.

And public charging, plus price, is what is preventing broader EV adoption. Not sure what is hurting the Mach E specifically other than price.

  • 1) Would you keep, lease/loan, or buy another MACH-E
  • Yes, and probably lease, if it ā€˜calculates’ favorably.
  • For now, will keep it fir at least 100K or 4 years.

  • 2) If you wanted to get out of the MACH-E into a different EV or ICE, give your reason to why

  • Not considering getting out… too happy with Operating costs and vehicle ā€˜favorables’.
  • Would like smoother suspension/ride in future MME

  • 3) What is the biggest shortcoming or drawback that is keeping EV buyers from choosing the MACH-E
  • My personal experience in discussing ā€˜drawbacks’ from friends/family gave been;
  • 1. Charging ā€˜anxiety ’ from fear of being stranded.
  • 2. Lack of EV knowledge
  • 3. Cost
  • 4. Belief in tech being ready for ā€˜prime’ use.

  1. Maybe. I've had my MME for 6 months, and I can say the driving experience is exceptional. But I've also had a few issues with it, and Ford doesn't stand behind their products the way top-tier auto makers do.
  2. The only other EV I've been in are Teslas. While Teslas have superior electronics - particularly integration - superior charging, and superior self-driving, the brand is toxic and I don't need the social blow-back. I would always consider a Toyota/Lexus because they hold their value and Toyota stands behind their products better than Ford or any other car company.
  3. The biggest shortcoming is that the US isn't there yet infra-structurally for EVs. Long distance travel requires half-hour breaks every 200 or so miles, and commercial chargers aren't reliable. I would never own just an EV for that reason. EVs are for "around town", and they are perfect for that.

Hello:

I can say that since I've owned my MACH-E in August '24, I loved it except for the growing pains of the Level 3 charging (that got fixed), the delay of the Tesla Charging Adapter, delay of the BC 1.3 (and, I still have the issue of the Lane Centering / Lane Change sliders not working), and the Ford Service Center only having one EV guy (which slows down the wait time for repair delivery, except for Quick Lane on maintenance).

So, please let out your thoughts and feelings about your MACH-E experience.

Thank you.
1) The EV landscape will continue to evolve rapidly in the coming years. Battery technology and charging infrastructure are already on a feverish trajectory. The point is, I will continue to lease new vehicles so that I am protected against obsolescence and also to have a car completely under warranty.
2) and 3) I will get out of the MME in 2027 if they haven’t improved the charging speed. MMEs currently max out at 150 Kw whereas Teslas go up to 250 Kw and Kias are even higher. This makes a huge difference for level 3 charging on the road in terms of time savings. We use our MME for all non-road-trip driving because the maximum ā€˜local’ miles we drive are well under 200 in any given day. But we absolutely won’t use it on a road trip because we’d have to sit for 40+ minutes several times during our trips to go from 10-80%. For me that’s thew biggest issue. Range doesn’t even have to improve if they can cut these charge times in half (although that wouldn’t hurt either).

Otherwise, we LOVE our MME and would be inclined to lease another one….especially if they can include the magne-ride suspension on the Premium models as an option.
